Welcome to StratCommNet -- our listserve, website and newsletter -- which focuses on an interactive discussion of current integrated marketing and crisis communications events in higher education.

A quick note: One of StratComm's co-founders and editor, Christopher Simpson, President of Simpson Communications, LLC, was recently named Conference Chairman of the American Marketing Association's Symposium for the Marketing of Higher Education for the next two years. The symposium, the largest of its kind for higher-ed marketing, will be held in San Diego in November.

Marketing, Reputation, and Image Update

McKeon's efforts to curb tuition hikes ends: A landmark congressional effort -- albeit one that never got off the ground -- ended last week when California Rep. Buck McKeon announced he was ending efforts to enact federal legislation aimed at halting large tuition hikes by colleges and universities. We all owe a debt of gratitude to the higher-ed congressional lobbying teams. But we are left with the nagging question: what does the general public think of higher ed, when for more than a year congressional critics bemoaned "skyrocketing tuition hikes?"

Legislatures fiddle with tuition: Nationwide, state legislatures are seeking creative ways to control tuition -- without breaking the bank to fully fund public colleges and universities. The notion of continuing to control state costs while retreating from higher-ed funding may lead to a long-term reshuffling of our colleges and universities, as has been proposed in Virginia. Where will it end?

Brown University considers slavery reparations: Brown University is exploring payments or other reparations for its past ties to slavery. The move, which has sparked strong reactions, is led by the University president who has created a "Committee on Slavery and Justice." The committee will spend two years investigating Brown's historic ties to slavery and creating courses and seminars, while also exploring whether and how the university should take responsibility for its connection to slavery.

Campus Crises in the News

UCLA body parts probe widens: The "body parts for cash" controversy at UCLA continues to cascade out of control. See updates below of the grisly tale.

News from Colorado -- and it is good: SB 189 would grant enterprise status to all colleges and universities taking less than ten percent of their funding from state funds. CU and a select few other state colleges would currently be able to squeeze in under this limit.

News from Colorado -- and it is bad: Members of Congress now want hearings into the University of Colorado's alleged trading of sex for recruits signing to play football. Find an archived list of recent stories, and then several selected:

Norfolk student charged in murder: A Norfolk State University student has been charged in the murder of another student last year, a finding that has now called into question the school's hiring practices.

Out of the limelight, Baylor weighs in on gay marriage: Maybe they miss the spotlight, but Baylor officials eagerly jumped into the gay marriage controversy.

It is not a crisis yet, but just wait: Municipalities are beginning to challenge the tax status of some property purchased by colleges and universities.

Now for our roundup of funding problems as states' legislatures begin to wind down: Oregon universities in crisis: The economic roller-coaster ride in the Pacific Northwest is hitting a low point.

It is slightly better in Utah, but funding concerns not erased. And Georgia still worries. While it is worse in Kentucky. California students stage walkouts.
