Welcome to StratCommNet -- our listserve, website, and newsletter -- which focuses on an interactive discussion of current integrated marketing and crisis communications events in higher education.

During the summer (June, July, and August) the StratCommNet newsletter will be monthly.

Marketing, Reputation, and Image Update

Harvard money managers under fire: Some prominent donors are withholding private support, contending that Harvard grossly overpays the managers of its endowment. The issue is rarely discussed publicly in higher ed, but it is likely to become more prominent as calls for accountability grow. How to justify paying money managers well in excess of $1 million per year when faculty may average only a fraction of that amount? That is the question raging in Cambridge and sure to spread to other campuses soon.

University of Georgia divorces its fund raising arm: First the university president was in trouble, and then the athletic director came under fire -- now it's the fundraisers. In an odd twist by any measure, the arms-length relationship between the UG in Athens and its private support entity has grown exponentially. Is this an anomaly or a sign of things to come?

Campus Crises in the News

Colorado investigation comes to an end -- then explodes again: Just when we thought the scandal over Buffs football would finally end with release of the investigative report, President Betsy Hoffman reignites the combustible story with comments that are difficult to understand.

Tennessee State president resigns amid scandal: Another embarrassment at the top ranks of an institution.

Faculty member and priest at U. of Scranton charged with sexually abusing a minor:

Two Indiana University students killed in an off-campus fire: Two other students injured.

Messy divorce at the University of Georgia: What happens when a university's fund-raising machine -- which always operates at arm's length to avoid state open records laws and regulations -- goes to war with the institution? Amazingly, that is exactly what is happening at the University of Georgia, which is on an image and reputation roller-coaster ride of recent years. After the renown Hope scholarships pumped millions into the insitution in the last five-plus years, an array of controversies from a controversial president to a volatile Athletics Department continue to beleaguer UGA. The obvious question now is leadership: what kind of Board would allow the ongoing controversies that have to be harming one of the better public institutions in the South?

British student cheats -- then blames the University of Kent at Canterbury for his untoward actions:

Reefer madness at Ohio State: Countering administration's efforts to cancel the ninth annual Hempfest, a federal judge rules that the university must allow a pro-marijuana festival to be held on the Columbus campus.

And in athletics, Ohio State basketball coach fired for cheating: Jim O'Brien was fired early this month following revelations of $6K payoffs to a potential recruit. There is no indication that these actions are tied to the Hempfest referenced above, but one can only wonder.

Cincinnati basketball coach arrested for DUI: Bob Huggins was arrested on charges he was driving drunk after visiting with a recruit, an action that led to a paid suspension.
