Newswise Wires

Distributing your news releases via Newswise greatly increases their visibility and accessibility to reporters. Journalists who receive our email wires have requested them from Newswise. Your information, when part of Newswise, becomes part of thousands of journalists' information-management systems. All news releases are sent directly to journalists' email addresses and are included in a full-text-searchable database where they remain available for years. The news is categorized into one of four libraries:

- research news and feature articles about science
- research news and feature articles about medicine
- research news and feature articles about business
- research news and feature articles covering social and behavioral sciences, arts and humanities, education, and popular culture

A subscribing reporter receives via email the Daily Wire or biweekly virtual wires, which list the most recent news. Each wire includes a summary of and direct link to the full text of each release. Samples are available for review. MedWire, SciWire, LifeWire, BizWire. The Newswise Daily Wire, designed for journalists on daily deadline, contains all stories contributed the previous day.

In the online archive, reporters may browse the most recent news releases or use a sophisticated, full-text-searchable database to select news releases by topic, submitting organization, or other criteria.

Also, organizations with a packet of five (5) or more research stories may send a Special Wire. These are described more thoroughly in the section below entitled "Publicizing Your Meeting".

Monthly Thematic Wires

Newswise provides many opportunities to promote your features and experts. Each month, Newswise hosts thematic wires that focus on seasonal issues. All participating organizations are invited to submit releases. Thematic Wire sample: the Matters of the Heart Wire.

Relating to the Media

Newswise wire recipients are journalists whose relationship with us has evolved individually; some of these relationships span more than a decade, but each is based on respect, professionalism, and an important trust: that Newswise will exercise high editorial standards; deliver timely, newsworthy, and knowledge-based content efficiently; and empower our users with the technology to enhance its usefulness.

Thus, organizations who value Newswise as a partner in their media relations efforts have chosen more than our electronic distribution network — they have chosen our human one, an established network with trusted journalists and news organizations around the globe. It's a relationship that belies, after all, the virtual instantaneity of the Internet age — for it has been forged from over a decade of responsive, real-life interaction with journalists and media professionals.

Newswise Channels

Newswise Channels are an additional way we feature selected releases from the wires and highlight them in ways that are helpful to reporters.

Feature Channels are groupings of feature ideas that establish a thematic nexus around which writers can peruse, align, and juxtapose ideas to devise their own unique feature article about a trend, idea, or human-interest story.

Breaking News Channels are a rapid-response system to major (national and international) front-page news events that are expected to remain on the front page for several days. They provide access to experts, research, and background information related to breaking news events.

By offering a variety of formats in which reporters can access your stories, Newswise further ensures your releases the highest possible journalistic readership.

Embargoed News

Embargoed news is protected by our password access system. Only full-time, professional journalists who provide clippings to verify their status are given PressPass access to embargoed news. Before their password is registered, the journalists must promise to honor all embargoes. Only research news may be embargoed. We work with the leading journals and scientific and medical societies to honor their concerns. View reporters' thoughts on embargoed news.

News Release Video, Audio, and Images
Newswise has added the ability to deliver multimedia content. Contributors can embed custom video and audio content directly into news releases, which are highlighted in the wires sent to journalists. To showcase such releases, Newswise has also opened a dedicated Video and Audio Library. Helpful icons identify whether stories have embedded video or audio content available.

Contributors to Newswise are encouraged to upload images to accompany their articles. Images will be displayed in a new image browser in the upper right corner of the article's full text. Users may scroll through the image gallery one image at a time, without reloading the main article in their browser. Read more about the new system here.
"I use Newswise all the time. When I'm scanning Newswise, I'm looking for images that are relevant to the subject and to the reader. I'm always looking for links to images. I'm a reader, too, and am drawn more into an idea by its visual presentation."

News Archives
"I've always felt Newswise was a great value since many medical and science writers browse it. It is not like other services where news releases disappear." —Bob Schwadron
All news releases are posted to our archive and remain accessible for years. Journalists use this as a database of experts and background information. The powerful search function allows you to retrieve stories by any keyword, source name, subject, date, or institution. Rather than offering simply a keyword search, our archive is full-text searchable — each word in the full text of the release is indexed for searching. The Newswise archive extends the shelf life of your news release for years.

Expert Promotion

Newswise offers six different ways to highlight your experts.

Particularly, our expert query system allows reporters to request experts in one of four subject areas — SciNews, MedNews, BizNews, or LifeNews. The requests include a thorough description of the expert needed, deadlines, and contact information. Newswise forwards the requests via email to the appropriate participating higher education and research institutions. If your institution wants to respond to a reporter's query, you reply directly to the reporter via phone or email. Several sample queries are provided. This service is available only to nonprofit institutions and universities. View reporters' thoughts on the Newswise Query Service.

Publicizing Your Meeting
"Placing my releases with Newswise ensures that my release reaches its intended audience and does not get inadvertently deleted with unsolicited mail."
—Ken Satterfield   (see full letter)
Newswise provides institutions the option of creating a special edition of one of our wires to highlight news being presented at their annual meeting. These Special Wires provide journalists with a convenient way to view the news from a meeting in one email. Five or more research news releases are required for a Special Wire. You may view Special MedWire and Special SciWire samples.
In addition, Newswise hosts Virtual Press Rooms (VPR) for major national research meetings. The VPR is a web page developed by Newswise under your direction that addresses press-related information about an event. The VPR includes information about press conferences and media briefings, instructions for press registration, location of press facilities, related news releases, and event contacts for reporters. You may view a sample: Virtual Press Room.

Why Use Newswise?
Newswise offers a unique, direct, efficient, and affordable system to deliver news releases to journalists. Unlike data circuit wires (which are sent to central computers), costly database services offering unsolicited email options, hit-or-miss faxing, or slow, expensive postal mailing, Newswise conforms to the news-gathering style of journalists. Our wires offer journalists a manageable source of valued information. All in one email, reporters review the current research, or knowledge-based news, they want.
"We can't afford to buy lists of US journalists, but we have been able to reach audiences all over North America by posting key press releases to Newswise. I have found Newswise brings in queries and follow-up calls from all over North America."
—Rosamund Snow, Society of Chemical Industry, UK
