On Sunday, May 15, The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Canada’s Minister of Science, welcomed a new era of world-class scientific partnership between Canada and Japan as she unveiled the new TRIUMF branch office located at Japan’s KEK. Minister Duncan was joined by dignitaries from both laboratories to perform the ribbon cutting, celebrating the research collaboration between these two hubs for subatomic physics research.

Magnetism permeates every scale of TRIUMF life, from the cyclotron’s 17m diameter main magnet down five orders of magnitude to the tiny internal magnetic fields inside millimetre-sized samples probed by μSR (muon spin rotation/resonance/relaxation) experiments, all the way down to probing materials at the tens of nanometre scale with the βNMR (beta-delayed nuclear magnetic resonance) facility.

A consortium of institutions led by TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science, is granting sole rights for its proprietary technetium-99m (Tc-99m) production technology to ARTMS™ Products, Inc (ARTMS). Technetium-99m is used in over 80% of all nuclear medicine imaging procedures and is vital to patient care in areas such as cardiology, oncology, and neurology.

Released today in the prestigious journal Nature, the collaboration reports on the first spectroscopic measurement of an atom of antimatter using lasers. ALPHA is an international team of researchers, including the ALPHA-Canada group, which studies antihydrogen, the antimatter partner to hydrogen. Their latest work represents a major step towards developing a very precise test of whether antimatter behaves differently than its normal matter anti-twin, thus opening up a promising new front to address the basic antimatter question: “if matter and antimatter were created equally during the Big Bang, where is all the antimatter?”

Scientists at TRIUMF, the Institut de Physique Nucléaire, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have for the first time accurately predicted the properties of polarized deuterium-tritium thermonuclear fusion. Researchers with the CERN-based ALPHA collaboration have announced the world’s first laser-based manipulation of antimatter, leveraging a made-in-Canada laser system to cool a sample of antimatter down to near absolute zero. The achievement, detailed in an article published today and featured on the cover of the journal Nature, will significantly alter the landscape of antimatter research and advance the next generation of experiments.
