We at Newswise hope that you had a prosperous 2004. For this monthly report we have mined our data to give you a year-in-review for Newswise. We have included information on new reporters for the year, how many and what types of news releases were carried, and information on our query service.
Newswise Journalists
Newswise added 552 vetted journalists this year. Your news goes not only to journalists, but also directly to subscribing members of the public, and we increased the number of public subscribers and fringe** journalists by 1,769.

** We define fringe journalists as those who are: not full-time journalists, have potential conflits of interest (such as those who have a full-time job outside of journalism), have not yet provided journalism credentials, or who write for company or advocacy group publications.
Newswise Expert Finder Tools
Newswise continues to offer the Expert Query Service to our subscribers.This year we distributed a record number of queries -- 343. You can see the dispersion of the queries by category in the chart below:

Newswise Contributing Institutions
During 2004 Newswise had 364 contributing institutions renew their membership and 105 new institutions joined. We continue to create an environment of high quality research and feature news that journalists turn to when searching for a story ideas.
News Releases on Newswise
Last year Newswise distributed 6,116 news releases. These releases have been categorized by Library (SciNews, MedNews, LifeNews and BizNews) and by Story Type (Research, Feature, Policy, Announcement) in the charts below:


We have further broken down the list of releases in the charts below by showing what types of stories were submitted in the four individual libraries.
Stories submitted to the MedNews library were 70.5 percent research, 22 percent feature, .5 percent policy and 7 percent announcement.

Stories submitted to the SciNews library were 58.6 percent research, 28 percent feature, .6 percent policy and 12.8 percent announcement.

Stories submitted to the LifeNews library were 30.7 percent research, 50 percent feature, .5 percent policy and 18.8 percent announcement.

Stories submitted to the BizNews library were 42 percent research, 19 percent feature, 0 percent policy and 19 percent announcement.

The number of releases submitted to Newswise with a citation (journal, meeting or book) was 3,473. The chart below shows the dispersion. Fifty percent of stories with a citation were embargoed.

As always, Newswise has been authorized to carry embargoed news by all of the major research journals and meetings, including, for example, JAMA, Science, British Medical Journal and Lancet. We received 1,854 embargoed news releases in 2004.You can see how this is spread out over the four libraries in the pie chart below. Ninety-five percent of all embargoed stories contained a citation.
