Newswise and Feature Stories |
|
At Newswise we are continually striving to strengthen the relationship we have with our subscribing journalists so that we can increase their loyalty to Newswise and therefore to our member institutions. We feel that freelance journalists are a vital part of this group.
We recently surveyed the more than one thousand freelance Newswise subscribers to learn how Newswise could better serve them. Reporters were presented with a list of options for new services and asked to comment on how useful they thought they would be. More than 44% responded. As a result of this response, we are currently working on several new services for freelance journalists.
Of these new services for journalists, the most relevant to our contributing members are the ideas of increasing the amount and improving the quality of feature news carried on Newswise and enhancing the context of feature contributions.
The reporters responded quite favorably to the idea of an enhanced feature news service. Most of the responders ranked having more feature items available as a positive development. We also discovered that most of our freelance writers consider themselves feature writers, which is probably obvious, but now we have the data.
We did not ask for comments but received a few about this particular topic. Some freelancers' comments include:
"This sounds very helpful. We often come up with the ideas from the briefings and news—but having feature ideas along with the briefings would be an extra nice touch."
"This I've always thought would be a good idea."
"I think it would be good to broaden your story base."
Another aspect of this service is that we would offer journalists the choice of whether to subscribe to feature stories or not. Daily, hard news reporters would probably choose not to receive them, but the positive response by the freelance sector indicates that there would be a large group that would subscribe. Similarly, many of the magazine reporters would predictably subscribe to feature/trend/expert stories.
One way we have already begun to expand on the idea of a Newswise Feature Service is to offer thematic special wires. These special wires not only give journalists a solid launching pad for writing feature stories, but also provide our contributors a way to showcase their experts. In the past few months we have offered the Winter/Holiday Special Wire, a Politics Special Wire, and a Heart Health/Valentine's Day Special Wire. Many of the stories from these wires were among our Top Hit stories in recent monthly reports.
We plan to continue offering these thematic special wires on a regular basis and plan to have an editorial calendar of these offerings. Sometimes they will be related to current events, and other times related to topics of interest, such as awareness months. If you have ideas for thematic special wires that you would be interested in contributing releases to, please email them to info@newswise.com.

Your Individual Report
This is the 38th edition of the Newswise Monthly Report in which you'll find:
Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
Enhanced context Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to utilize this "interactive" newsletter as a way of eliciting your suggestions and to acknowledge those who have contributed suggestions.

Testimonials
March 9, 2005:
Well, I've been busy for a day and a half fielding calls and making interview arrangements for our professor in the space tether story [posted to Newswise.] Discovery Channel Canada is sending a crew to do a 4-5 minute feature and the New Scientist magazine has a web article and is doing a print story. Also, the CBC did an interview.
Now that I can pitch this as a story receiving international coverage, I'll have a lot more leverage.
We are thrilled! Thanks for all your help.
—Karen Lykins, News Bureau Director, Tennessee Technological University

March 4, 2005:
I would also like to convey how valuable your service has been to our association. I have several other duties besides public relations. Using your service to post news releases about our members' research has allowed me to be highly effective with the time I have available. It has also produced great results. For example, one of the releases we posted about potential nerve damage caused by improper golf grip was picked up by print and online news outlets across the globe. A Google search brought up articles from Taiwan, Australia, India, the Middle East, and many outlets in the U.S. We had a potential audience in the tens of millions, perhaps more.
