The Effectiveness of Embargoed Research News |
|
This month we investigated the effectiveness of putting embargoed research news releases on Newswise. For each of the 178 embargoed news releases submitted to Newswise during the month of March, we performed a Google News search (based on keywords chosen by a Newswise editor) one to two days after the embargo expired. This was by no means a thorough search of the news media—so many clips will have been missed—however it provides a quick assessment and shows the effectiveness of this media relations strategy: the distribution of embargoed news.
We found at least one clip for 97% (or 173 of 178) of the embargoed releases. We have categorized these by library in the chart below.
|
Library
|
Stories with Clips
|
Percentage
|
| SciNews | 31 of 34 | 91.2% |
| MedNews | 135 of 139 | 98.5% |
| LifeNews | 5 of 5 | 100% |
| BizNews | n/a | n/a |
This demonstrates a high probability of effectiveness for embargoed news on Newswise. Similarly, while there is a high probability that the embargoed news will be used by journalists and will appear in print, the stories are also picked up widely by multiple media outlets. For 63% of the releases, we found five or more clips. To view sample clips for some of these releases click here. Again, please keep in mind that these data were generated from a one-time Google search within two days after the embargoes expired.
While doing this research, we noticed several media outlets that regularly picked up news releases. The chart below shows a few of the publications and their rate of use of embargoed stories within a single month:
|
Media Outlet
|
# of Embargoed Stories (out of 178)
|
% of Stories Used
|
| ABC | 61 | 34% |
| Atlanta Journal Constitution | 27 | 15% |
| Forbes | 44 | 25% |
| Reuters | 35 | 20% |
| Washington Times | 41 | 23% |
Because of the careful vetting process Newswise uses to approve journalists for access to embargoed material, we have been approved to host embargoed news by the leading journals and medical and scientific societies. For example, some of the embargoed releases in this study were published in the following journals:
|
- Archives of General Psychiatry
- Archives of Internal Medicine
- BMJ
- CHEST
- JAMA
- Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology
- Journal of Pediatrics
- Lancet
- NEJM
- Neurology
- New Scientist
- PNAS
- Science
|
Journalists routinely employ multiple sources, so we can't infer from the data above that Newswise was necessarily the sole source for each of these clips. We can say that for all the embargoed stories that generated clips, media outlets with one or more Newswise subscribing journalists on staff figure prominently, and furthermore, exposure to the news from multiple sources often makes strategic sense for an effective media relations campaign. Newswise is trusted by journalists as an essential component in this process, and many of our subscribing journalists have relationships with us spanning more than a decade.
|
|
This cursory study of clips reflects overall effectiveness. A more comprehensive clipping service over a period of several months would generate a larger volume of clips, especially by those that are not routinely found on Google News. However, this study demonstrates ample effectiveness within a short time after the embargo date. This is the second time we have performed this study within 3 years, and in both cases, we have found that placing embargoed research news on Newswise almost guarantees effectiveness in terms of finding clippings.

| Journalists Respond |
"There is no question, your site is the premier site for information on embargoed medical journal articles and medical conference releases. We go to it several times a day, and rely on it to make sure we don't miss an important study. You give us great lead time, and you are often a "one-stop-shopping" site for the medical news WE deliver to our viewers. Thanks so much for your service."
—Mike Rosen, MD, Daily HealthFeed |
"It's been a very helpful resource and I appreciate the priviledge of being able to access the information, which has been the progenitor for many health stories that I've recently done. Keep up the great work!!!!"
—Jim Newman, WBTV-TV (CBS Charlotte) |
"I am enjoying it. Has given me some things to think about and has helped generate story ideas. Thanks."
—Cindy Sutter, Boulder (CO) Daily Camera |
"I find most of it quite useful. I do a research briefs column each month and Newswire gives me some good leads."
—Dan Crummett, Texas Farmer-Stockman |
"I visit Newswise every day and I have found a few very useful articles. Thanks."
—Shereen Jegtvig, Nutrition.about.com |
"I wanted to let you know I enjoy getting the business news that you send. It is helpful to our publication for story ideas. I looked at some of your other services. I didn't realize you had a way to directly contact experts. I think that is an extremely useful tool that I will probably be using in the future."
—Melissa Booraem, Gwinnett Business Journal |
"I actually find Newswise one of the better bits of info that floods into my mail box, I've seen several good story ideas in there. thanks."
—Matt Phillips, Bakersfield Californian |
