| About this New Format |
Welcome to your Newswise Monthly Report. As you can see, we have a new format. It will deliver your individual hit counts and general data, share feedback from our subscribing journalists and your peers, and give you information regarding the effectiveness of Newswise.
In this report, we've included information on New York Times reporters use of Newswise, feedback from journalists at UPI, NBC and many other media outlets, and success stories from participating institutions. We encourage your feedback (see the survey and suggestion box). It helps us evaluate Newswise and make changes to better suit your needs (see Acknowledgements). We hope you will find this new format useful and look forward to receiving it each month. We look forward to hearing from you.

After carefully matching up NY Times stories from November 1, 2001 to January 31, 2002
against news releases which had been submitted to Newswise we found:
Three New York Times journalists who subscribe to Newswise wires regularly wrote articles based
on news releases sent on our wires. Twenty of the stories written by these three journalists
from November to January were from Newswise. The chart below lists these stories by
journalist. We have included the date the news release was submitted to Newswise, a link
to the release on our site, the submitting institution, the date the story was published
in the New York Times and a link to the New York Times article.
While it is not possible to prove that these reporters used Newswise as the source for the
story, the pattern indicates that they did.

This is the first edition of a new monthly report format in which you'll find:
Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
Enhanced context Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to use this "interactive" newsletter as a way of
eliciting your suggestions, and to acknowledge those who have contributed
suggestions.

"I'm a freelance journalist in the UK and I find your service an invaluable source of leads. I don't know why our own universities can't pool and publish information in a similarly cooperative and coordinated way." --Kevin Dowling, Freelance, UK |
"How am I enjoying Newswise? I love it, just love it!! What a resource! I've already used several wires for columns from your site, am currently working with someone at The Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, thanks to Newswise." --Jane Oppermann, The Daily Herald, Barrington, Illinois |
I've found Newswise to be very useful. I was signed up at my last job, too (at Psychology Today) and it's wonderful how I've found great leads on it for both PT and Parenting. --Sarah Smith, Parenting Magazine

I love Newswise - use it daily for our NBC feed -thanks! --Helen Chickering, NBC News Channel, North Carolina

Ran two Newswise stories that turned out well. One turned up on CNN and DrudgeReport (about Republicans having more nightmares than Democrats). It was exclusive to you and we broke it (haven't seen it anywhere else and the two news companies that picked it up sourced us). --Michael Martin, United Press International (UPI)

I've been subscribing and really using your service for, what?, 5 years? We just had another story picked up by NBC... a story we did because of your service (kids' back-packs). Thanks for being our "silent scoop" partner. --Todd Husty, WESH-TV (NBC Orlando)

To recognize contributions to our collaboration at Newswise, we want to thank those of you who make suggestions to this resource for journalists. Second, we want to encourage all of you to participate in this way.

Earle Holland, Director, Research Communications, Ohio State University, suggested the new "preliminary" reports on the most recent month's data.
Newswise reports date back to 1994, when we introduced quarterly reports sent via mail. This innovation came at the suggestion of Joann Rodgers, Director, Media Relations, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. Subsequently we moved to monthly reports delivered via email.
We've now moved to a seamless email and web system. We are weaving the reports into the context of a monthly report that expands the information to include information we receive from you, from reporters, and from our research.
We will shortly expand these reports in several new ways that expand the quantitative data on the effectiveness of your releases.

Becky Soglin, Associate Editor II, University of Iowa Health Center, suggested that we add the embargo time to the embargo date in the various Newswise wires. Including the embargo time with the date in the wires further protects the material from an inadvertant early release, and we are happy to add add this new feature to the wires immediately.
Note that we send the embargoed stories only to journalists who may access the full-text stories with a password. The wires to you, our clients, do not contain the embargoed stories, in order to honor the embargo restrictions and to safeguard the interests of our clients who provide the embargoed stories. However, as a courtesy, we send a copy with only that institution's embargoed story to the contributors.
