| Newswise and Google |
| Recently, Newswise staff members researched the effectiveness of Google searching in finding clips of stories submitted to Newswise. We searched by headline for some of the most frequently hit stories from January and have included results below. We are continuing these investigations to see how we can put this type of research to work for you. View Results. |
| About this Report |
| In this report, we've included information on the effectiveness of Google searching to find releases published online, feedback from journalists at NBC, AP and many other media outlets, and success stories from participating institutions. We encourage your feedback (see the survey and suggestion box). It helps us evaluate Newswise and make changes to better suit your needs. We look forward to hearing from you.

| Survey |
This month's survey topic is Google searching.
Take Survey. |
|
|
As a part of our investigation of how we can use Google searching to better serve you, we hope to elicit your feedback about this type of clipping search. Please see the survey in this Monthly Report which covers this topic.
In the table below, you will find the results we received from Google searching two of the top-hit stories from January. We found the title of the story was the most effective search term--better than author's name or keywords, for example. We also found that Google gave us more comprehensive results
than Lycos, Dogpile, AltaVista or Ask Jeeves. Additionally, it was not worthwhile to search beyond the first 10 Google pages. Finally, there seemed to be a "when it rains it pours" effect. Inevitably, when we found one link to a story, we found many.

This is the second edition of a new monthly report format in which you'll find:
Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
Enhanced context Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to use this "interactive" newsletter as a way of
eliciting your suggestions and to acknowledge those who have contributed
suggestions.

"Finding Newswise useful? Are you kidding!? It's a godsend especially
on slow news days! There are a couple of colleagues on Newswise and we've
occassionally commented how great it is. As Canadians, we look for ways to
localize the stories and this usually works quite well. We only wish there
was something like Newswise to promote research and expertise available on this side of the border. As with most requests I found a great expert for
nickname story though Newswise." --Chris Zdeb, Edmonton Journal |
"I look it through every time it shows up, often referring items to colleagues." --Malcolm Ritter, Associated Press (AP)

"Newswise DailyWire is indispensable. I'm a freelance journalist for Popular Science, Genetic Engineering News and other magazines. I have queries out on four stories from yesterday's package. Usually, there are three or four each week that I query on. What I like best is the archive. I find that related stories crop up about one year (!) after the news release came out, and I can then go back and reference experts in the field, now that their work is nearer commercialization. If I think of any ways to fine tune the service, I'll let you know, but right now it's simply the best service available." --Gail Dutton, Freelance |
"Newswise is great! I read it every day and have developed a few of the stories for air. I wouldn't change a thing." --Peter Reiss, NBC News, Discovery News This Week |

New Scientist
The story submitted to Newswise SciNews section The Great Giveaway was the third most accessed news release in January.
"In terms of pick up, the story has been republished all over the place, most recently in the Italian news weekly Internazionale. I don't have a definitive list yet, though I've heard it appeared in national newspapers in New Zealand, Denmark and France." --Claire Bowles, New Scientist
Wake Forest University Babcock Graduate School of Management
Business Professor Turns Inventor, Patents Christmas-Tree Stand was in the top hit stories for the BizNews section.
"We had great success locally both in print and with TV, and have had more than 60 mentions/hits in all. An Associated Press story on it was picked up and published in 59 newspapers all over the country. It appeared in papers as large as the Cincinnati Enquirer and the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, each with circulations of more than 325,000, to ones as small as the Parsons (Kan.) Sun (circ. 6,480), which happens to be the hometown of the professor, Gary Shoesmith. The clip count above does not include a call we received from a reporter from the National Post in Toronto, Canada. That contact came directly as a result of the Newswise posting." --Eric Whittington, Wake Forest University Babcock Graduate School of Management
