Newswise Reports: Preliminary Data vs. Final Data
Recently, we have begun providing you with both preliminary hit counts for stories you submit, as well as, one month later, final data. We have noticed a striking difference in the two sets of information. Our findings for January are below. View Results.

About this Report
In this report, we've included information on the difference between the preliminary data and the final data we relay to you on your releases, feedback from journalists at UPI, ABC and many other media outlets, and success stories from participating institutions. We encourage your feedback (see the survey and suggestion box). It helps us to evaluate Newswise and make changes to better suit your needs. We look forward to hearing from you.

Preliminary vs. Final Data Con't.
  • Overall, we found that hit counts rose by 14,172 hits, or 43%, between the collection of preliminary data and final data.
  • The average hit count on a Research/Feature story rose by 45 hits, or 50%.
  • The mean hit count on a Research/Feature story rose by 43 hits, or 60%.
  • For Higher Ed Events, the average hit count rose by 42 hits, or 323%, and the mean hit count rose by 38 hits, or 260%.
  • On average, anywhere from 1 to 5 stories dropped out of the top 10 and were replaced by stories not formerly in the top 10.
  • In the top 10 stories of each section, the hit counts rose as follows:
MedNews120 hits or 27%
SciNews71 hits or 29%
LifeNews51 hits or 50%
BizNews 56 hits or 79%

Although the preliminary data give you some sense of how your release was received by subscribing journalists, the final data is more informative. This seems particularly true for news releases submitted in the latter part of the month. For these stories, the data in the preliminary report has had even less time to accumulate than stories submitted earlier in the month. For example:

  • VIOLNCE.UMC, submitted 1-24-01, was not in the Top 10 LifeNews stories in the preliminary report, but was in the final Top 10.
  • PROD2.TCB (1-31-02), ENRON.UBM (1-24-02), CRM.PUR (1-25-02) and ENRON2.UBM (1-24-02), were not in the Top 10 BizNews stories in the preliminary report, but were in the final Top 10.

We hope you will review both sets of data for your news so that you can benefit from both the early and mature information.

Your Individual Report

This is the third edition of a new monthly report format in which you'll find:
  • Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
  • Enhanced context
Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to use this "interactive" newsletter as a way of eliciting your suggestions and to acknowledge those who have contributed suggestions.

"I read Newswise every day and consider it a valuable asset. Your items often form the basis for news shorts I run on the Monday health pages of the Daily News, which I edit. Thanks."
--Michael Segell, New York Daily News
"I look at every issue. Our science writers usually use several items every day."
--Will Scheltema, United Press International (UPI)
"I really enjoy the Newswise DailyWire. I probably pick up a story every other week off of it that I otherwise would not have had through routine means. I wish I had a better suggestion for improvement....but I find it very useful as it is!"
    --Melissa Wright, WSB-TV (ABC Atlanta)
"It's a great service and I am grateful for it. I read it every day and use about one story per day."
