Newswise and Freelancers
This month, Newswise surveyed of 200 subscribing freelance journalists about how they use your news. Twenty-two percent responded to the survey. View Results.

Newswise Update
In an effort to broaden the scope of Newswise, we hope to expand and strengthen the Arts and Humanities section of LifeNews. Our goal is to obtain more journalist subscribers seeking art-related news while increasing the number of art-related news releases on our wire. This will help balance out the sciences with the arts and develop Newswise into a more well-rounded resource of "knowledge-based news."

We will be contacting you soon, via email, with more information on how we plan to expand the Arts and Humanities section of LifeNews. As we begin, we are open to any suggestions or advice that will help us in our efforts -- so please give us a call or e-mail if you have ideas to share.

About this Report
In this report, we've included information on how freelance journalists use stories placed on Newswise, feedback from journalists at the Salt Lake Tribune, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and many other media outlets, and success stories from participating institutions. We encourage your feedback (see suggestion box). It helps us to evaluate Newswise and make changes to better suit your needs. We look forward to hearing from you.

Although the freelance journalists are using your material in a variety of ways, they are, indeed, using it. Newswise has 1,060 freelance journalists (national and international) subscribing to one or more wires. The publications they write for vary from The Daily Mail (UK) to Parenting Magazine and across the spectrum of topics. The number of publications they have reported to us that they have written for totals 1,696, although they often write for more publications than they report. Do you have suggestions for survey questions for Newswise subscribing journalists?

Your Individual Report

This is the fifth edition of a new monthly report format in which you'll find:
  • Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
  • Enhanced context
Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to use this "interactive" newsletter as a way of eliciting your suggestions and to acknowledge those who have contributed suggestions.

"Yes, we're using stuff from Newswise pretty regularly here. It's quite a valuable service. Please keep up the good work!"
--Philip Berardelli, United Press International (UPI)
"I love the service. I often find stories on the wire...at least two to three a month. I rely on the medical section, but refer stories in other categories to the assignment desk. Thanks!"
    --Micki Flowers, KIRO-TV (CBS Seattle)
"I like the daily update quite a lot. I'm looking more for research that I can turn into lifestyle/featurish pieces. I do, however, use research sometimes in feature stories, and I'm always passing along research I can't use to those who can. I sure would like to see more lifestyles-oriented research."
    --William Hendrick, Atlanta Journal-Constitution
"I use Newswise every day, and I find stories on it every day."
    --Jean Patman, HealthScout
