| Journalists and Newswise Press Passes |
| This month Newswise did a study of how journalists subscribing to Newswise have used their press passes over the last 6 months to access your embargoed news. The results of this investigation are below. View Results. |
| About this Report |
| In this report, we've included information on how journalists use their press passes, feedback from journalists at New Scientist, Self and several other media outlets, and success stories from participating institutions. We encourage your feedback (see suggestion box). It helps us to evaluate Newswise and make changes to better suit your needs. We look forward to hearing from you. |

Roughly 25% to 30% of stories posted to Newswise carry embargo
restrictions, and Newswise requires journalists to log in with their press
pass username and password in order to access them while the embargo is
in force. Press passes are only issued to full-time, professional journalists
who have provided clippings to Newswise to verify their status as a journalist.
Newswise has a rigorous embargo protection policy honored by journalists
and has been approved by Science Magazine to carry embargoed stories before
the embargo is lifted because of our password system.
Of the 3847 Newswise subscribing journalists, 2887 (75%)
have press passes. The remaining have either never requested a press pass
or have not yet provided clippings. On average, we add 50-60 new press
passes each month. Over the last six months, 1,627 individual journalists
have used their press pass. The chart below shows how many journalists
used their press passes in any given month from January to June. This
chart also shows how many journalists are freelance or on staff at media
outlets.

The number of embargoed stories accessed by each reporter
varies across a broad range from 1 to more than 100 monthly. Roughly 2/3
to 3/4 of press pass users access between 1 and 5 embargoed stories per
month. The chart below, broken down by month, shows the distribution of
reporters by numbers of hits on embargoed releases.

(NB: Stories without embargo restrictions
which account for roughly 70-75% of stories posted to Newswise
are NOT documented by these statistics, as user authentication is
not required to view them.)
|
Currently, Newswise is working on a redesign of our website. With the new design, all journalists will be required to have a username and password. Those journalists with current press passes will have password clearance to access embargoed stories. Those journalists without a current password will have limited access and only be able to view unembargoed stories unless they provide adequate credentials.

This is the sixth edition of a new monthly report format in which you'll find:
Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
Enhanced context Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to use this "interactive" newsletter as a way of eliciting your suggestions and to acknowledge those who have contributed
suggestions.

"Newswise is great--such a variety of stories and plenty of food for thought. As I said, I commission features, so I tend not to chase down single items but instead build up a picture of trends and hot, happening areas. A major part of my job is knowing who is doing what, so that I can point writers in the right direction once I commission them. And that's where services like Newswise really help."
--Kate Douglas, New Scientist |
"I'd say that I print out three or four items a week for potential story leads. Newswise is definitely one of my top sources for recent studies. I'm actually getting a lot of good new info from your emails."
--Clare Horn, Natural Health Magazine |
"I LOVE Newswise. I think it's terrific and I use a lot of the stories that I find there for our Happiness Flash page."
--Caroline Schaefer, Self Magazine |
"Your service is excellent. I have commissioned stories based on two or three of your announcements. Those were releases about new medical or anthropological or historical findings in Africa. One suggestion would be to have more releases with pictures available."
--Yves Sorokobi, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) |
