New Newswise Special Wires Con't.

In August, at the suggestion of one of our clients, Newswise introduced a new service--topical Special Wires--with the Special 9-11 Anniversary Wire. It was so successful, that we decided to continue offering Special Wires for unique and important issues. In October we offered the Special Wire on Iraq and the November Elections, and in November, we are offering the Special Wire on Winter, and its Holidays.

These special wires are a hit with both our clients and our subscribing journalists. Before the Special 9-11 Anniversary wire, we surveyed journalists to gauge their interest in the topic. You can view some of their responses here. We received 93 submissions to this wire. Stories from this wire comprised 60% of the top hit LifeNews stories in August. (View this month's Top Hit Stories.) Clients also reported hearing directly from reporters about their stories.

For the Special Wire on Iraq, November elections our subscribing journalists suggested topics they would like to see on the wire. Some examples are below:

"I am interested in some of the arguments that get less news coverage in the US. The debates between various segments of the Left for instance."

"A particular facet that I think is important but under-explored is the growing perception among some paleo-conservatives that mostly Jewish neo-conservatives are fomenting the war because they see it as being in the best interests of Israel. Right now Pat Buchanan and Joe Sobran are the most articulate exponents of this belief. It seems to me that this is newsworthy and also worthy of policy analysis."

"A special Iraq Wire would be very interesting. What would make it more so, is if it contained insight and information beyond the mainstream and Internet hash."

This Special Wire had 18 submissions. If you submitted a release to this wire, your preliminary hit counts will be available in your September/October Newswise report, to be mailed to you next month.

For our upcoming Special Wire on Winter/Holidays we again surveyed our journalists to determine what they would like to receive in the wire. More than 300 responded within the first 24 hours. A list of responses can be found here. Of those who replied, 96 were freelance and 219 were on staff at a publication. The staff journalists break down into the following categories:

  • 105 Magazines
  • 42 Newspapers
  • 7 Wire Services
  • 39 Television Stations
  • 11 Online Publications
  • 7 Newsletters
  • 8 Radio Stations

From this latest journalist survey, we have learned that our magazine subscribers would need leads 3-5 months earlier. For this reason, we are considering doing a Winter/Holiday wire in November, which will benefit our Newspaper/Radio/TV journalist, and a second Winter/Holiday wire in July for our Magazine journalists. What do you think?

We plan to offer special topical wires roughly once a month. If you have ideas for a special wire, please email or call us (434-296-9417) to discuss it. We welcome both your feedback and your suggestions for new services. We would also like to thank Marilyn Herbert of Halstead Communications / College Connections, who suggested the original 9-11 Anniversary Wire.

Your Individual Report

This is the ninth edition of a new monthly report format in which you'll find:
  • Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
  • Enhanced context
Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to utilize this "interactive" newsletter as a way of eliciting your suggestions and to acknowledge those who have contributed suggestions.

  • September 2002 Newswise Report (preliminary)
