PIOnet is an electronic conversation or internet forum via email with more than 400 of your peers -- public information officers (PIOs) -- at higher education and research institutions. Participants in PIOnet discuss professional issues related to knowledge-based media relations programs. Our conversations have covered a variety of topics. Some topics recently discussed on PIOnet include:
Branding--the use of the college seal
Web Management--whose responsibility is it?
Presidential Inauguration--planning, etc.
College Annual Reports
First Amendment Rights of Students
Tracking effectiveness
Is media relations a thing of the past?
News release style
Keeping updated media lists
Crisis Plans
Exclusives--should you give them?
Marketing
Copyright--can you put clippings on your website?
PIOnet is an effective way to put the experience of your peers to use and to brainstorm ideas with public information officers around the world. In many cases, consulting with your peers via PIOnet can save you from having to 'reinvent the wheel' on certain projects.
Dann Hayes of Grinnell College approached PIO net about his development of a statement to the press for the college to use if approached by media on its stand on freedom of expression. Several suggestions and much discussion ensued. By the end of the discussion, Dann, pleased with the results, wrote in to thank the contributors, "Wow, guys! These are great. Right now I am working on a combination of something...I'll post the final when I get it done...This has been a great help. If anyone questions the value of lists such as this one, this proves they can be very helpful."
PIOnet provides a forum to become acquainted with your peers and to develop a network of contacts. We also often have job openings posted to PIOnet. It is a great place to seek applicants if you are looking for an experienced public information officer.
Recently, Newswise surveyed members of PIOnet asking for suggestions about how we could improve the listserve and how it could be better marketed. We received some great feedback. Some suggestions included an online archive of PIOnet conversations, a "Question of the Month" feature, and conducting surveys on public relations practices to share with the group. These suggestions for improving PIOnet will be reviewed by the Newswise staff in the coming weeks.
Of the marketing tips we received, the most prevalent was "word of mouth." We would like to encourage you to pass the word on about PIOnet to your colleagues, especially at other institutions, and have them pass it on in return. The more widely spread and diverse PIOnet becomes the more useful it will be. Please feel free to copy and paste info from this document into an email message to your colleagues.
To register for the PIOnet listserve, please complete our subscription form. Or for further information about PIOnet, view the PIOnet homepage or contact us at 434-296-9417 or info@newswise.com. PIOnet is a FREE listserve sponsored by Newswise.

This is the eleventh edition of a monthly report format in which you'll find:
Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
Enhanced context Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to utilize this "interactive" newsletter as a way of eliciting your suggestions and to acknowledge those who have contributed suggestions.
