Newswise News Service
In this report, we discuss the Newswise News Service. See the results below.

About this Report
In this report, we've included information on the Newswise News Service, feedback from journalists at Indanapolis Star, Guidepost and many other media outlets, and success stories from participating institutions. We encourage your feedback (see suggestion box). It helps us to evaluate Newswise and make changes to better suit your needs. We look forward to hearing from you.

Newswise Clippings
Recently, you may have received clippings from Newswise. We are currently researching the possibility and feasability of adding an online clippings service to Newswise. We would like to stress that we are still in the investigational phase of this idea. While we sent lots of clippings during the recent month as we conducted a month-long survey of the effectiveness of our clippings strategy, we are not currently doing this. Please do not interpret the absence of these clippings emails as evidence that Newswise is not generating clips. We are not currently searching for them, although it is something we would like to do in the future.

Newswise News Service Con't.
During 2002, we initiated the Newswise News Service to expand the distribution of your research news (beyond the traditional news media) to leading news portals, medical and health care websites, and news databases, as well as to policy makers and science- and news-attentive audiences.

The Newswise News Service provides a value-added service to participating institutions by expanding the distribution of your news directly to interested public sectors. Some examples are shown in the box to the right.

As part of this enhanced service, we made modest format changes so the articles appear more like a news stories rather than news releases while maintaining the integrity of your articles, protecting your copyright, maintaining attribution, and creating a consistent style for the context of the article on the web. You may view a sample of the Newswise News Service format here.

For example, 14 different facets of the about.com network use Newswise material. The exact type of use varies from site to site. About.com's Arthritis site links directly to the release on Newswise. The Mental Health page reprints the article, sources the contributing institution and pastes the following paragraph below each article:

Articles in The Science of Mental Health are written by the originating institution. This article was originally posted to Newswise. Newswise maintains a comprehensive database of news releases from top institutions engaged in scientific, medical, liberal arts and business research. The friendly interface allows you to search, browse or download any article or abstract.

W.W. Norton & Company uses your research news on Newswise on several websites they have created as complementary material to help college students' "learn and remember the important concepts, processes, techniques, and facts from the textbook."

W.W. Norton first used this strategy with their basic biology text for non-science majors. On the Discover Biology website at click on the "Biology in the News" button on the left.

Your Individual Report

This is the thirteenth edition of the monthly report in which you'll find:
  • Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
  • Enhanced context
Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to utilize this "interactive" newsletter as a way of eliciting your suggestions and to acknowledge those who have contributed suggestions.

  • January 2003 Newswise Report (preliminary)
