| How Publications Use Newswise |
| In this report, we discuss how some publications use Newswise. See the results below. |
| About this Report |
| In this report, we've included information on how publications use Newswise, feedback from journalists at National Business Review (New Zealand), Sydney Morning Herald (Australia) and many other media outlets, and success stories from participating institutions. We encourage your feedback (see suggestion box). It helps us to evaluate Newswise and make changes to better suit your needs. We look forward to hearing from you. |
| Newswise Clippings |
| Recently, you may have received clippings from Newswise. We are currently researching the possibility and feasability of adding an online clippings service to Newswise. We would like to stress that we are still in the investigational phase of this idea. While we sent lots of clippings during the recent month as we conducted a month-long survey of the effectiveness of our clippings strategy, we are not currently doing this. Please do not interpret the absence of these clippings emails as evidence that Newswise is not generating clips. We are not currently searching for them, although it is something we would like to do in the future. |

In a recent monthly report we tracked the clippings of all research stories. While this showed the broad range of coverage it did not measure the full envelope of coverage due to Newswise. This would require a much more comprehensive clippings strategy. In several reports we've shown how individual publications, such as the New York Times, use Newswise. Below we demonstrate how three other publications used Newswise in single issues.
First, we looked at the Health Section of the Washington Post, a special supplement appearing each Tuesday. Ten Washington Post reporters, editors and researchers subscribe to Newswise wires. The Feb. 25 Washington Post Health Section featured three Newswise releases.
The three items appeared in the "Family News" starting on page F1.
|
The first was about a Wake Forest study of the use of progesterone-type hormone to prevent pre-term births. See the Newswise story that first appeared on Newswise embargoed on Feb. 5. |
|
The second item features a University of Iowa study of people with scoliosis.
See the Newswise story that first appeared embargoed on Newswise on Feb. 1. |
|
The third story was based on a Johns Hopkins Medical Institution study of teenagers and healthcare confidentiality policies. See the Newswise story that first appeared embargoed on Newswise on Jan. 30. |
The second example is Men's Health, one of numerous health magazines, including Prevention and Runners World published by Rodale Press in Emmaus, PA.
Men's Health has English, German, Finnish, and French versions (and probably more). At least 49 Rodale reporters, editors and researchers, including 13 for the Men's Health editions, subscribe to various Newswise wires.
These publications use many Newswise stories. Some are difficult to link, however in the most recent issue, we were able to show that at least eight citations were related to specific stories we could trace.
The March issue of Men's Health contained citations from the following Newswise releases.
The final publication we reveiwed this month is Shape Magazine. Shape has 5 reporters subscribing to Newswise. In the April 2003 issue, 2 stories came from Newswise.
This is just three examples of publications that use your information from Newswise regularly and consistantly. For a complete list of publications, including the number of reporters who subscribe to Newswise, visit the Newswise Media Subscribers directory.

This is the fourteenth edition of the monthly report in which you'll find:
Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
Enhanced context Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to utilize this "interactive" newsletter as a way of eliciting your suggestions and to acknowledge those who have contributed suggestions.

"It's a great service - keeps me looking for stories. I'm a tv documentary producer/director and it's easy to stop looking at the news so i'm glad for the reminder."
--Anne Hainsworth, CTV Television (Canada) |
"I'm finding the Newswise service particularly useful because each week I compile a column which looks at all new research/trials etc from around the world. Your reports are concise and nearly always have useful quotes from authors of study which I can include in my precis."
--Kym Nicoll, Sydney Morning Herald (Australia) |
"Newswise is, as ever, proving to be a very useful source of information as I have been lead to several of the topics I am highlighting in my book from stories I have picked up from Newswise."
--Sharon Ann Holgate, Freelance (UK) |
"I can safely say that Newswise is of great value to journalists -- even those on the margins of science journalism like me. I have no training in science and my discipline was literature. But it so happens that I am working in a field that involves scientific insight, and I try to understand whatever I can. For this, Newswise is quite helpful as the language you use in general is the language of communication, not the language of peer review that is common to scientific journals. To me, this is valuable. The purists might argue that the "language of communication" compromises the gravity of scientific enquiry. But I am from a different constituency. I know it for a fact that a lot of my colleagues also find Newswise useful. So, keep up the good work."
--Sopan Joshi, Down to Earth (India) |
"I am really enjoying the med and sci wire, and finding them incredibly useful for my "Body Clock" feature."
--Lynda Wharton, National Business Review (New Zealand) |
