New Newswise Website
In the coming days, Newswise will be launching a new website. Along with an updated look will come some new features which may interest you. Read below for more details.

About this Report
In this report, we've included information on the new Newswise website, feedback from journalists at San Antonio Express-News, St. Louis Post-Dispatch and many other media outlets, and success stories from participating institutions. We encourage your feedback (see suggestion box). It helps us to evaluate Newswise and make changes to better suit your needs. We look forward to hearing from you.

Request from a Journalist
We received the following request from a journalist this month:

"Hi, it's Leah Ingram, one of the freelance writers that uses your Newswise release service to get story ideas. Can I make an unsolicited suggestion? Can you ask your participating schools and others to include an EMAIL address for contact information, along with a phone number, on their releases? Sometimes when I'm on deadline, sending out an email under pressure is easier than making a phone call. Just my two cents.

In this particular case, I "Googled" the person and found her email address on the first hit, but if I'm pressured for time and have multiple choices, I might choose based on the availability of the email."

One reason I believe some email addresses are being dropped from releases is that they are "embedded" in the HTML, and when your contributor copies and pastes the release to the contribution form, the email address is lost. Please make a note to explicitly replenish any embedded info, if you are copying and pasting from an HTML document.

Thanks,

Roger

The New Newswise Website Con't.

Shortly, Newswise will be launching a new website. In addition to a new appearance, there will be major improvements in functionality. We will be introducing several new features, which will enhance our service to you. Read below for more details.

Because you will have privileged access to certain confidential information, including your own embargoed stories, the new Newswise website will require each user to have a username and password.

In the coming days we will be supplying you with a temporary username and password, which you may then personalize. Please keep it simple and memorable. Your username and password will allow you to log on to our website to contribute news items, update your entry in the Newswise Contact Directory, make changes to your wire subscriptions, edit your news releases to make corrections or update old information, see your own embargoed stories, and view your customized access reports.

Passwords will also be supplied to journalists and to the public. When a journalist logs on to Newswise, they will be able to view your embargoed and unembargoed news releases with full contact information. The public will have access to unembargoed news releases, but will not be able to view contact information.

Here's a detailed summary of the features and enhancements you will enjoy on the new Newswise website:

New Look

The Newswise site has undergone an extensive redesign to ensure that all users experience ease-of-navigation, an intuitive user interface, and a clean, attractive design.

Real-time control of your user account

Login anytime and access "My Preferences", where you may:

  •  Edit/update your:
    – email address(es), phone number(s) and contact data
    – change your username/password

  •  Wire subscriptions
    – subscribe/unsubscribe to any/all Newswise wire subscriptions at up to 2 email addresses
    – enter vacation dates to temporarily suspend digest delivery

  •  Newswise Contact Directory
    – choose to include or exclude your contact entry from the Newswise Contact Directory

  •  Staff user management
To consolidate the management of user accounts, designated individual(s) at your institution may, at your request, be granted further privileges to
    – edit/update the contact information of all your institution's user accounts
    – request removal of individual accounts
    – create new user accounts for your institution

Enhanced article control

  •  New article management section
    – review all articles posted by your institution
    – edit, update or withdraw any previous contribution

  •  Advanced support for world languages/symbols/extended characters
    – Any symbol, accent or non-Latin character you can create in your documents will display as you intended it, regardless of the platform or application software employed by the end user

  •  Easier contribution form
    – after logging in, your institution name and email address will be pre-filled into the contribution form
    – full control of source display: your choice of an institution name for attribution may be the same or different from the institution billed

  •  News releases may be posted for immediate release, or at any future date and time. Our editors are available around the clock to ensure your contributions appear faultlessly

  •  Fine-tuned embargo dates
    – embargo dates and times may now be specified down to the minute
    – expired embargoes will become available immediately to the general public

Enhanced security

  •  All journalists and contributing PIO's will have password access to their own user accounts

  •  Protected contact information in news-releases
All contact information you provide in your news releases is now visible only to authorized users, namely:
    – verified, logged-in journalists
    – members of your staff

  •  Embargoed stories
Likewise, embargoed stories will only be accessible to:
    – verified, logged-in journalists
    – members of your staff
    – upon expiration of the embargo period, the story will become available to the general public, although display of contact information will continue to be governed by the rules concerning "Protected contact information", above.

Powerful new search and browse features

Our article search function has become even more powerful:

  •  articles may be sorted by date or by relevance
    – when single words are entered, separated by spaces, the search will return articles containg any of the given words. By default, more relevant articles sorted to the top, although the user may instead choose to sort most recent articles first

  •  full-featured toolset for advanced searches:
    – multi-word phrases are supported
Surround a phrase in double quotes to find articles containing that phrase in its entirety. For instance, "Marriage of Figaro" will return articles containg this full phrase, but will not return articles containing simply "marriage"
    – modifiers are supported, for example:
+monkey 'monkey' must appear in every article returned.
-gorilla 'gorilla' must not appear in any article returned
~noise 'noise' is an unwanted word but shouldn't be banned entirely
cell* match words that begin with 'cell'
(i.e., 'cell' and 'cellar' are both found)
  •  New browse menus
    – Latest Stories
In addition to library specific browse menus for Sci, Med, Life and Biz -news, we've now added a new browse menu dedicated to the most recent stories contributed in all libraries
    – All browse menus may be sorted by date, or by contributing institution
    – Your Instuitution name, as it appears below your articles' descriptions and in the header of your news releases, is now a direct, clickable link to your institution's entry in the Newswise Contact Directory

Reports

You will enjoy access to your comprehensive monthly reports and customized access statistics just as before, although we will shortly be introducing a real-time, privileged viewing section for you to review hit counts on your stories and site performance data as it accumulates.

Your Individual Report

This is the fourteenth edition of the monthly report in which you'll find:
  • Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
  • Enhanced context
Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to utilize this "interactive" newsletter as a way of eliciting your suggestions and to acknowledge those who have contributed suggestions.
