Newswise Best Practices Con't. |
This month Newswise is highlighting two participating institutions who exemplify "best practices" in adapting and designing their news releases to fit the online medium and journalists' needs. Both institutions have developed a consistent style and quality control both for content and context.
First Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions always includes contact information, especially email addresses, in news releases. Journalists often report that they want email addresses for the news release contacts. Hopkins' releases also always include links to additional information directly related to the subject of the news release. Several examples of well-formatted, Hopkins news releases are:
The other "best practices" institution is Purdue University. Their news releases stand out for several reasons. Like Johns Hopkins, they always include contact information with email addresses as well as links to additional information. Purdue also consistently lists contact information for the expert, or researcher, in the release. Most releases contain links to images as well. Another format enhancement that highlights Purdue University's "best practices" is that they provide an abstract of the journal article for each news release with a citation.
Journalists often request that a link to the journal article or abstract be provided in news releases. They want all of the information related to the news release in one, easy-to-access location. Several examples of well-formatted, Purdue news releases are:
Both Purdue and Hopkins also consistently cite funding sources for the research in their releases. As you can see in the side bar to the right, this is an important issue to journalists.

A note from a subscribing journalist:
The Newswise Daily Wire has become an increasingly valuable tool in our newsroom, enabling us to do one stop shopping for stories we may wish to pursue.
One of the things I like to emphasize when speaking with people who write releases for academic and research institutions is the need to include information describing the sources of funding for studies and whether the researchers and institutions have received compensation in any form from anyone who might have a stake in the outcome of the work.
If a grape juice company funds a study on grape juice and cardiovascular disease, that doesn't necessarily negate the research, but it's a fact I think listeners are entitled to know. If a researcher owns a significant amount of stock in a pharmaceutical company and is doing work that could have an impact on that stock, that's also information I'd like to know about.
Best,
Charlie
