Nearly three-quarters of a million hits were recorded on Newswise articles in the first half of 2004. Here we take an in-depth look at these hits, reviewing and categorizing each one by the source of referral: Newswise sources (eg. the wires, our site), Search Engines (Google News, Google Web, Yahoo, etc.), and External Sites. In addition to this cumulative data, you'll also be able to examine the influence an article's age—either current or archival—has had on the source of referrals.
It's important to note that the article hits reported below are all from human users; we have ignored hits from web-indexing robots as well as all hits whose referring source could not be precisely determined.
We think the results will intrigue you, and hopefully broaden the context within which you evaluate your individual data.
|
The cumulative data above can be further broken out by the age of the article accessed: current, or archival. For the purposes of the following charts, we have considered an article "current" if it has been accessed within one month of its contribution date; accesses on articles older than one month have been classified as "archival".
Of the total hits analyzed above (737,274), we noted the following:
| Age of Article When Accessed | Access Counts | Percentage of Total |
| Current | 496,156 | 67 % |
| Archival | 241,118 | 33 % |
| TOTAL | 737,274 | 100 % |
Let's look more closely at each of these two groups.
While the data above may have confirmed some of our expectations—that, for example, the greatest share of hits on current articles are generated by Newswise sources—quite a few details surprised us. Note, for instance, how much a boost in exposure for current articles is provided by the inclusion of Newswise among the selected news sources indexed by Google News: nearly 13 % of all hits on current articles are referred from this resource alone. Also worth noting is the consistently important role played by third-party websites in enhancing exposure for both current and archival news. But the high rate of referrals from third-party websites to current Newswise articles, roughly one in every five hits, suggests that editors and webmasters at these sites pay close attention to developments at Newswise, and are quick to link to those Newswise articles most relevant to their topic areas or target audiences.
Each of us will surely wish to evaluate these statistics within the context of our individual media and public relations campaigns, but one point strikes us as particularly salient: unlike closed, proprietary information systems of the past (the original Compuserve or AOL, for example)—and unlike exclusive, direct-to-newsroom electronic feeds—this data suggests that participation in a centralized, widely cross-referenced, web-based resource for news distribution can leverage tremendous additional exposure for a news item, adding value that lasts long beyond the traditional "shelf-life" of the news.
We are also open to the possibility of compiling other such statistics. What do you think? Do you have other suggestions?

This is the thirtieth edition of the monthly report in which you'll find:
Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
Enhanced context Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to utilize this "interactive" newsletter as a way of eliciting your suggestions and to acknowledge those who have contributed suggestions.
