Newswise Expert Finder
Newswise offers journalists a variety of tools to help them find experts at our member institutions. In this monthly report feature we will be discussing each of these tools in depth as well as letting you know about some future tools that we plan to offer.
Newswise Query Service
Newswise offers a query service to our subscribing journalists. Reporters request experts in one of four subject areas „ SciNews, MedNews, BizNews, or LifeNews. The requests include a thorough description of the expert needed, deadlines, and contact information. Newswise forwards the requests via email to the appropriate participating higher-education and research institutions. If your institution wants to respond to a reporter's query, you reply directly to the reporter via phone or email. This service is available only to non-profit institutions and universities. View reporters' feedback on the Newswise Query Service.
In the first three quarters of 2004, Newswise has distributed 280 reporter queries to our member institutions.
The Expert Query service is valuable for journalists. Several -- including two from the American Medical News and one from Scientific American -- use the service regularly.
If people on your staff would like to receive queries in one or more of the topics, please notify us.
Newswise Archive
Reporters also tell us that they use the Newswise Archive and search form to find experts. In the April 2004 monthly report we presented data on reporters' use of the Newswise Archive. We showed that it was substantial and increasing.
Newswise currently maintains a database of more than 36,000 articles from 1997 to the present. As opposed to a simple keyword search, the archive is full-text searchable — each word in the full text of the release is indexed for searching. Searches may be further refined by date, library, and/or contributing institution. Results are returned by sequence of relevance. The Newswise Archive extends the shelf life of your news release for years.
Newswise Contact Directory
Journalists may also search for experts by using the Newswise Contact Directory. All clients may include a link to their web-based experts database in this directory. In the May 2004 monthly report we discussed the Newswise Contact Directory. If a journalist is looking for an expert at a specific institution, the Newswise Contact Directory can be searched to find an institution's media contact who can direct them to the appropriate expert.
Forthcoming Expert Finder Tools
Soon we will be enhancing our Expert Finder tools by adding a button to the navigation bar on all Newswise website pages, to help journalists locate experts using the methods described above.
Do you have suggestions for what we might do to help you with your media-relations efforts involving experts?

This is the twenty-sixth edition of the monthly report in which you'll find:
Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
Enhanced context Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to utilize this "interactive" newsletter as a way of eliciting your suggestions and to acknowledge those who have contributed suggestions.

"I absolutely adore Newswise. I have found several reports that have helped with stories I'm currently working on, as well as fresh ideas to pitch to my editors at various magazines. I really look forward to my Newswise email every morning."
--Nancy Kalish, Freelance |
"Now that I'm co-hosting a public radio show about (and writing more extensively about) language, I use the LifeWire service more than I ever did in the past, with all its mentions of studies involving language"
--Martha Barnette, Freelance |
"I love Newswise. It is great having all the news broken down by subject and e-mailed to me daily. It is a nice reminder to check and see what is going on in the news"
--Kerri Penno, Advance for Medical Laboratory Professionals |
"I'm really enjoying Newswise! I'm mainly using it as inspiration for the radio program I'm doing (dr.dk/videnskabensverden) and for the webpages I'm editing (dr.dk/videnskab)."
--Jakob Lisbjerg, Danish Broadcast Corporation |
"I'm one of the people who have been signed up for your news service for a while. Medical Information from many of the press releases found on your site often makes it into our health magazine (Island Scene) and www.islandscene.com. I'm writing because I'm moving to another publication. I'll be working at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin as an editor. But I want to make sure that a couple of our writers continue to receive your very useful Medwire after I leave. The names of the writers are ... and .... Their emails are ..., and .... Your assistance will be much appreciated.
