New Newswise Wire Format
This month Newswise introduced a new format for the HTML DailyWire and began offering HTML versions of MedWire, SciWire, LifeWire and BizWire. Read below for more details, as well as insights into the methods we use to ensure that all Newswise wires are spam filter friendly.

About this Report
In this report, we've included information about the new Newswise format for HTML wires, insight into spam filtering, feedback from journalists, and success stories from participating institutions. We encourage your feedback (see suggestion box). It helps us to evaluate Newswise and make changes to better suit your needs. We look forward to hearing from you.

New Newswise Wire Format

This month Newswise introduced a new format for the HTML DailyWire and began offering HTML versions of MedWire, SciWire, LifeWire and BizWire.

New Wire Thumbnails

Along with the desire to enhance readability, appearance and degree of user interaction with the new wires, another major reason for this redesign is to stay on top of the spam filtering issue. Our design incorporates the highest level of standards-compliance to ensure our wires maintain their friendly relationship with email filtering technology, and thereby enhance the potential that your news will be seen and used by journalists.

Behind-the-scenes, our email headers and message coding adhere strictly to internet protocols that prescribe well-formed, well-identified messages; in general, spam filters are constructed to recognize these signs of legitimacy and to view such messages favorably.

A further indication of the legitimacy of Newswise emails from the point of view of email filters is that the identifying addresses embedded into our email "envelopes"—addresses which are used to verify the sender (these include the "From", "Reply-To", "Return-Path" and "Errors-To" addresses)— can all be authenticated under a single, consistently verifiable domain that is synonymous with Newswise and synonymous with the IP address of our sending computer—namely lists.newswise.com or newswise.com or 201.89.131.201—and that each of these are mutually "resolvable" (ie., equivalent to one another) according to the requirements of the internet's domain name system. Lastly, we perform periodic evaluations of the compatibility of our mailings with the most commonly employed filtering mechanisms to ensure that these systems recognize and approve the legitimacy of Newswise mail.

Because we know that Newswise wire recipients do not always check their email from the same place or using the same hardware/software, all Newswise HTML wires also include an embedded pure-text version, which displays automatically if a user's system is not compatible with HTML. This pure-text version includes fully-functional links to the full articles.

If all of this is more technical than you wanted to know, rest assured that Newswise is dedicated to delivering your news in the most responsible and internet-friendly method possible, and ensuring high standards of professionalism in both design and content.

While plain-text editions of all the wires remain available to those that prefer them, we strongly recommend that you edit your preferences in order to receive the new HTML versions. The HTML version of our wires offer a more visually accessible format, links to a variety of Newswise services and support documents, as well as the latest tips on how to best utilize Newswise. You will also be viewing the wires in the default format that we send to all newly subscribing journalists.

If you would like to switch over to the HTML version of any of our wires, simply follow these easy instructions:

1) Go to www.newswise.com
2) If you are not already logged in, enter your username and password and click "Login" *
3) Click "Edit My Preferences" in the upper left corner of the page
4) Click the "Digest Subscriptions" tab.
5) Choose the HTML button for any wire that you would like to receive in HTML format.
6) Click the red "Store My Changes" button at the bottom of the page

*If you do not remember your login, simply go to www.newswise.com and click "forgotten login" in the upper left corner of the page.

Do you have suggestions or comments about the new wire format? Let us know.

Your Individual Report

This is the thirty-fourth edition of the monthly report in which you'll find:
  • Earlier results
A preliminary report on access counts is now provided for files you've contributed during the most recent month, in addition to a final report on your prior month's activity. This allows you to track both preliminary and longer-range access counts for your stories.
  • Enhanced context
Your reports are now provided within the greater context of this monthly Newswise report, which offers perspectives on your data not previously available, such as studies of how the media access and use Newswise and your stories. We also hope to utilize this "interactive" newsletter as a way of eliciting your suggestions and to acknowledge those who have contributed suggestions.

  • October 2004 Newswise Report (preliminary)

    Journalists Respond

"I say this without reservation, Newswise is the most valuable tool I have behind my own roledex and the web. I sing your praises and wish I had thought of it first."
—Harry Jackson Jr., St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"Let me say what a great service you offer. I almost always get to talk to the right people when I put out a query."
    —John Greiner-Ferris, Freelance

"I like Newswise because you include offbeat items not included in eurekalert and other medical wires such as the item last week on how seniors could live on a cruise ship for the same price as an assisted living facility which ran on the front page."
    —Elaine Carey, Toronto Star

"I use the Newswise wires quite often for story ideas and for contacts on stories that I am doing, people I think might be good sources. I'd say at least once a week and some weeks more often. I've also used the queries and contact services several times. In all, I find the service very helpful."
    —Marinia Pisano, San Antonio Express-News

"It's hard to say how often I find Newswise useful, but I look at it every day, mostly trolling for ideas on which to base editorials or for background on topics I may already have written about. I think this is a great service and appreciate having it as a resource."
    —Daryl Perch, Hartford (CT) Courant
