Homeland Defense

Murray Hamilton, DirectorRocky Mountain Center for Homeland Defense

Murray Hamilton is a research professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry. A senior defense scientist for the Canadian Department of National Defense from 1983 until 2002, Hamilton is an internationally recognized expert on medical countermeasures against weapons of mass destruction, particularly nerve agents and biotoxins. The Rocky Mountain Center for Homeland Defense (RMCHD) is a resource for anti-terrorism as well as a U.S. Center of Excellence for research and development of antiterrorism expertise.The RMCHD provides expertise on responding to both natural and manmade disasters, including terrorism. Part of the University of Denver Research Institute (DRI) and funded by the Centers for Disease Control, Army Institute for Chemical Defense and the Department of Defense, the center provides training for disaster first responders as well as information for the business sector and the community at large.

David Goldfischer, Associate Professor of International StudiesDirector, International Security Masters Program

Goldfischer directs the Graduate School of International Studies program in International Security, including homeland security. Goldfischer has written several books on different aspects of international security and his articles have been featured in International Interactions, New Political Science, and Political Science Quarterly. The International Security program provides expertise in strategy and arms control, homeland security, regional security, the changing nature of warfare and the process through which governments choose and implement foreign and national security policies, including the role of international and non-governmental organizations.

Transportation Security

Joseph Szyliowicz, Professor of International StudiesFounder, Intermodal Transportation Institute (ITI)

Joseph Szyliowicz is an international expert on transportation policy, technology and development. His special interests are in aviation security, terrorism and the Middle East. He is the recipient of the 1997 International Award for Transportation and Ethics from the Alliance for Transportation Research Institute and the Outstanding Scholar Award from the Burlington Northern Foundation in 1986. He is author or co-author of a half-dozen books on transportation, energy, technology and the Middle East. He has written more than two dozen articles and op-ed pieces on transportation security.

Governing disaster

Susan Sterett, Professor of Political Science

Political science professor Susan Sterett is teaching a course called Governing Disaster this fall. The first class meets Tuesday, Sept. 11 in Sturm Hall Rm 492. Given the topic of the class and the significance of the day, Sterett will have a guest lecturer, who is a disaster sociologist. The media is welcome to attend the class, from 10 - 11:50 a.m.

Chemical weapons defenses

Don StedmanProfessor of Analytical Chemistry

Stedman holds the university's Phillipson Chair in chemistry, is an internationally recognized authority on air quality, and can speak on chemical and biological weapons.

Middle East

Jonathan AdelmanProffessor, DU Graduate School of International Studies

Jonathan Adelman is a professor at the Graduate School of International Studies specializing in international relations and the Middle East. He has written or edited 10 books on the subjects and is wrapping up his latest, Global Threats, which focuses on the Middle East region. A frequent contributor to national news outlets, Adelman has also been sent by the U.S. State Department on 14 international speaking tours and served as the doctoral dissertation advisor to current U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during her time at the University of Denver.

Shaul Gabbay, Director, Institute for the Study of Israel in the Middle East

Part of the Graduate School of International Studies, the Institute for the Study of Israel in the Middle East (ISIME) functions as a unique center that examines Israel in the context of its embedded role in the Middle East. ISIME director Shaul Gabbay has studied extensively the fabric of "social networks," similar to the networks reportedly involved in terrorist attacks. Gabbay is available to talk about these socio-political networks, explain Fundamentalist vs. Modernist thought, as well as comment on current events taking place in Israel.

Religious dimensions

Carl Raschke, Professor of Religious Studies,

Raschke chairs the Department of Religious Studies. He is available to comment on the religious dimensions and background of terrorist violence. He is the author of numerous books and hundreds of articles on topics of popular religion and society. His best-known work, Painted Black, surveys the relationship between certain religious cults and violence in contemporary society. His new book, Global Christ, studies the role of religion in global tension and conflict.
