Newswise — CHICAGO – The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recently honored U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum (Minn.) with its 2018 Public Policy Leadership Award for her work in nutrition, food and agriculture policy.

“The Academy honors Representative McCollum because of her strong commitment to issues including global food access and nutrition education programs,” said registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy President Mary Russell.

The annual Public Policy Leadership Award honors members of Congress for their outstanding service and support for issues of importance to the Academy and the public. The Minnesota Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics nominated McCollum for the award. She has served in the House of Representatives since 2001.

“Our members appreciate Rep. McCollum’s leadership in reauthorizing the Global Food Security Act, and applaud her continued bipartisan work on passing commonsense nutrition legislation that benefits the public,” Russell said.

McCollum helped introduce legislation for the creation of the Global Food Security Act, which was signed into law in 2016 and reauthorized in October. The Global Food Security Act enables the federal government to partner with food-insecure countries to help them become more self-sustaining through agriculture-led economic growth and improvements to maternal and child health and nutrition.

“The reauthorization of the Global Food Security Act is something we should all be proud of,” said McCollum in a pre-recorded acceptance video which aired October 24 during the Academy’s Public Policy Workshop in Washington, D.C.

“Working together, we can continue to make progress on reducing health disparities, bringing nutritious foods to communities in the United States and across the globe,” McCollum continued. “Your expertise and advocacy have been invaluable in these efforts.”
