Newswise — Renowned research scientist Debbie C. Thurmond, Ph.D., has joined City of Hope as professor and founding chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology within the institution’s new Diabetes & Metabolism Research Institute. Thurmond will lead City of Hope’s efforts to develop new diabetes treatments, focusing on potential therapies that can reverse or prevent the onset of the disease.
A renowned expert in the biological underpinnings of diabetes, Thurmond joins City of Hope from Indiana University, where she was a professor of pediatrics and associate director of the Basic Diabetes Research Group within the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research.
“Dr. Thurmond’s extensive experience, research and discoveries in the diabetes field make her a perfect fit for City of Hope,” said Arthur D. Riggs, Ph.D., director of the Diabetes & Metabolism Research Institute at City of Hope. “We are extremely pleased to have her expertise and experience as we break new ground in the research and treatment of diabetes.”
Already renowned for its important discoveries in the understanding and treatment of diabetes, City of Hope in 2014 launched the institute as an expansion of its existing diabetes program. With the new department, the institute will further emphasize innovative approaches to the cure and prevention of diabetes.
“City of Hope has a long and strong history of groundbreaking diabetes discoveries, and my team and I are extremely delighted and excited to join such an exemplary institution,” said Thurmond, who will be bringing a team of researchers with her. “The superb human islet research group and core facilities will help build our research programs in the prevention of, and treatments for, type 1 and type 2 diabetes in ways not previously imaginable.”
Thurmond received her Ph.D. and postdoctoral training at the University of Iowa, and her M.S. and B.S. degrees from the University of California, Davis. She currently serves on multiple editorial boards, national/international grant review panels and as associate editor for Diabetologia.
