Newswise — The American College of Radiology’s Commission on Patient- and Family-Centered Care (CPFCC) announced the formation recently of a new Population Health Management (PHM) Committee. Syed F. Zaidi, MD, is the chair of the new committee. McKinley Glover, MD, will serve as vice chair.
The CPFCC works collaboratively within the College, and with outside patient-centered care organizations and professional medical societies, to ensure high-quality care is provided in a manner that incorporates the needs, wants and values of our patients and communities.
The CPFCC’s PHM Committee will work to ensure that the value of high-quality radiologic and radiation oncological care is recognized as a key component in improving the overall health of populations. The PHM Committee empowers radiologists and radiation oncologists as leaders in PHM and works collaboratively with patients, clinicians, health care administrators and community health organizations to develop innovative and patient centered population health management strategies in order to ensure that imaging is integral to delivery of high quality and cost-effective healthcare aimed at improving and maintaining health.
“I am honored to chair the Commission’s Population Health Management Committee,” said Dr. Zaidi. “We will strive to help guide ACR members in avenues of engagement with population health management, whether it’s through adoption of low dose chest CT, opportunities to increase screening, or following up on important findings such as abdominal aortic aneurysms and lung nodules. We must make sure patients don’t fall through the cracks of our fragmented health system. Radiologists can and do play a leading role in population health, and this committee will look to create toolkits and define best practices, further empowering our membership to expand their roles in advocating for the best healthcare for our communities.”
“Radiologist engagement is vital to the development and implementation of payment models focused on population health management and risk-based contracting,” noted Dr. Glover. “As healthcare organizations and physicians assume increased risk for healthcare quality and costs, demonstrating the value proposition of appropriate and timely use of imaging will be vital for radiologists and radiology as a profession.”
The Population Health Management Committee and its two new leaders look forward to advancing these efforts in support of the CPFCC’s overall work to improve healthcare satisfaction by promoting constructive relationships between radiologists and other physicians with their patients, families and communities.
