Newswise — INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) announced several award winners during its 66th Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. One Honor and four Citation Awards were presented. Both awards recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to sports medicine and the exercise sciences.

Scott Powers, Ph.D., Ed.D., FACSM, received the 2019 Honor Award.

“ACSM annually presents the Honor Award to an individual with a distinguished career of outstanding scientific and scholarly contributions to sports medicine and/or the exercise sciences,” said William E. Kraus, M.D., FACSM, president of ACSM. “We are elated to recognize Dr. Scott Power’s tremendous accomplishments, service and contributions to the field.”

Carol Ewing Garber, Ph.D., FACSM, FAHA, FNAK; John M. Jakicic, Ph.D., FACSM; David Poole, Ph.D., FACSM; and Lawrence Spriet, Ph.D., FACSM received the 2019 Citation Award.

“Citation Award winners are selected for their outstanding performance in the areas of research and scholarship, clinical care, administrative services and educational services,” added Dr. Kraus. “We are thrilled to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of this year’s awardees.”

Scott Powers, Ph.D., Ed.D., FACSM, received the 2019 Honor Award. Dr. Powers is the UAA endowed professor and distinguished professor in the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in the physiology and biochemistry of exercise, Dr. Powers has published more than 270 research articles, books and book chapters, and his work has been citied roughly 30,000 times. Dr. Powers has been an active member of ACSM for more than 40 years, serving as vice president of ACSM and president of the Southeast Chapter.

Carol Ewing Garber, Ph.D., FACSM, FAHA, FNAK, is a recipient of the ACSM 2019 Citation Award. Dr. Garber is a professor of movement sciences and the program director of the graduate program of applied physiology as well as chair of the department of biobehavioral sciences at Teachers College, Columbia University. She has authored more than 85 scholarly articles and 17 book chapters. Dr. Garber has a long history of service to ACSM and the New England Regional Chapter (NEACSM). She is an ACSM Fellow and Past President and has served on the ACSM Board of Trustees, Publications Committee and Pronouncements Committee as well as on the NEACSM Board of Trustees.

John M. Jakicic, Ph.D., FACSM, is a recipient of the ACSM 2019 Citation Award. Dr. Jakicic is the director of the Healthy Lifestyle Institute and chair of the Department of Health and Physical Activity at the University of Pittsburgh. Considered a leading authority on the benefits of physical activity for weight management, he has more than 230 peer-reviewed publications and has given more than 200 invited presentations. Dr. Jakicic has been an ACSM member for more than 30 years, serving on the ACSM Board of Trustees, multiple committees and as associate editor for Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise®. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of ACSM.

David Poole, Ph.D., FACSM, is a recipient of the ACSM 2019 Citation Award. Dr. Poole is a professor of kinesiology, anatomy and physiology at Kansas State University and director of the cardiorespiratory exercise lab. Dr. Poole has published more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and reviews. His contributions to exercise science and medicine include seminal discoveries that helped define oxygen uptake kinetics during intense exercise, the role of critical power in exercise performance, how muscle capillaries function, and how heart failure impacts muscle microcirculation and predicates exercise intolerance. His discoveries helped lay the scientific foundation for dietary nitrate supplementation to improve heart failure patients’ physical capacity and life quality. Dr. Poole has been an ACSM Fellow for more than 30 years and has served on several ACSM committees, as president of ACSM’s Central States Chapter. He is the current associate editor for contrasting perspectives for Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise®.

Lawrence Spriet, Ph.D., FACSM, is a recipient of the 2019 ACSM Citation Award. Dr. Spriet serves as a professor in the Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. His research has spanned diverse areas of emphasis, ranging the spectrum of health and disease to mechanistic-based and applied research. Dr. Spriet has published nearly 200 research articles and 62 review articles and/or book chapters, and his work has been cited more than 10,000 times. He has served on the USA and Canadian Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) Advisory Board and Expert Panel, been an editor for several international journals and is currently on the International Olympic Committee Sports Nutrition Diploma Advisory Committee and a member of the Prohibited List Expert Group for the World Anti-Doping Agency. Dr. Spriet has been an ACSM member for more than 41 years.
