Newswise — After an extensive national search, University Hospitals has named Alan J. Papa as President of University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center. Papa, a highly respected health care executive, begins his new appointment on November 18.

Papa will be responsible for the continued growth and operations of UH Ahuja Medical Center, including leading the $200 million UH Ahuja expansion project to accommodate changing demographics, service needs and technologies.

The UH Ahuja expansion is expected to begin in early 2020 and will include labor and delivery services, new neonatal intensive care unit, the largest sports rehab complex in Northeast Ohio, comprehensive breast health center, new ambulatory surgical center, expanded emergency department and more.

Papa also will have responsibility for clinical programs and services, patient outcomes, safety and quality. Additional priorities include enhancing revenue growth and patient experience, while furthering integration initiatives within the UH system. 

He comes to UH after nine years at Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where he served most recently as Chief Operating Officer.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in business from Youngstown State University and a Master of Business Administration from Cleveland State University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) and active in community and professional organizations.

He is board chair of the Summit, Portage and Medina County Chapter of the American Red Cross; chair of the board of Lifebanc of Ohio; and board member of the American College of Healthcare Executives Northern Ohio.  Papa and his wife, Nancy, reside in Hudson, Ohio.

Papa follows M. Steven Jones, who has served as interim President of UH Ahuja for the past six months.
