AMERICAN ACADEMY OF DERMATOLOGY ELECTS NEW OFFICERS, BOARD MEMBERS
Newswise — ROSEMONT, Ill. (April 22, 2019) — The American Academy of Dermatology has announced the results of its annual election. The AAD’s new officers and board members will lead the world’s largest dermatologic society, representing more than 20,000 physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and medical, surgical and cosmetic treatment of skin, hair, and nail conditions. These officers and board members, all of whom are board-certified dermatologists, will also hold the same position for the American Academy of Dermatology Association, a sister organization to the AAD that focuses on government affairs, health policy and practice information.
OFFICERS
Kenneth J. Tomecki, MD, FAAD, will be installed as president-elect in March 2020 and will hold the office of president for one year beginning in March 2021. He is a staff physician in the department of dermatology at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Dr. Tomecki currently serves the AAD as an editorial board member for the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Before that, he served as an assistant editor of JAAD and, most recently, as AAD vice president and a member of the board of directors. Dr. Tomecki is vice president of the International Society of Dermatology and vice president of the American Dermatological Association.
Neal Bhatia, MD, FAAD, will be installed as vice president-elect in March 2020 and will hold the office of vice president for one year beginning in March 2021. He is the director of clinical dermatology at Therapeutics Clinical Research in San Diego. He previously served the AAD as a member of the board of directors. Dr. Bhatia is also the secretary and treasurer of the Noah Worcester Dermatological Society and president-elect of the Pacific Dermatological Association.
BOARD MEMBERS
Murad Alam, MD, MSCI, MBA, FAAD; Cheryl M. Burgess, MD, FAAD; Naomi Lawrence, MD, FAAD; and Amy McMichael, MD, FAAD, were elected to the AAD’s board of directors. They will each serve a four year- term beginning in March 2020.
Murad Alam, MD, MSCI, MBA, FAAD, is professor, vice chair and chief of cutaneous and aesthetic surgery in the department of dermatology at Northwestern University in Chicago. He currently serves the AAD as the associate editor for JAAD. He is also president of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and a past treasurer for the Women’s Dermatologic Society.
Cheryl M. Burgess, MD, FAAD, is in private practice in Washington. She is also an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University Medical Center and George Washington University Hospital. In addition, Dr. Burgess serves on the board of directors for the Dermatologic Aesthetic Surgical International League and the Skin of Color Society, and she is the associate editor for the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
Naomi Lawrence, MD, FAAD, is a professor of clinical medicine and director of the Procedural Dermatology Fellowship Program at Cooper University in Camden, New Jersey. She is also an associate editor for the Dermatologic Surgery Journal and is a past president of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery.
Amy McMichael, MD, FAAD, is a professor and chair of dermatology at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She is a past president of the Skin of Color Society, a past vice president of the Women’s Dermatologic Society and a past secretary-treasurer of the North American Hair Research Society.
