Newswise — Chicago (July 23, 2013): The Recovery Room Show—a podcast that originally aired in 2009 and is now available on the American College of Surgeons (ACS) website—has announced the development of three new episodes, beginning with a new show to be released tomorrow, July 24, 2013.
Episode 19 of The Recovery Room Show is the first show to be released since 2011 and explores the field of integrative medicine and its role in patient care. “Integrative Medicine as a Whole-Patient Approach” features an interview by host Dr. Rick Greene with Barrie Cassileth, PhD, who has more than 25 years of experience in integrative medicine, and currently serves as the Chief of the Integrative Medicine Service and the Laurance S. Rockefeller Chair in Integrative Medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

During the interview, Dr. Cassileth discusses both the benefits and the misconceptions commonly associated with integrative medicine. She views use of the term “alternative medicine,” when associated with integrative medicine, as inappropriate because she says there are no “alternatives” to mainstream care. Integrative medicine includes evidence-based therapy that is not otherwise a part of mainstream patient care and uses it to help treat both emotional and physical symptoms. It also extends treatment into survivorship—a part of the approach to treat the whole person, not just the symptom.
“We’re integrating all the standard medical practices that one would expect for proper care of serious illnesses,” Dr. Cassileth explains on The Recovery Room Show. “Integrative medicine in general speaks to the importance of dealing with patients’ symptoms and [continuing to deal] with their symptoms throughout survivorship.”
The Recovery Room Show host Frederick (Rick) L. Greene, MD, FACS, is a surgical oncologist and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) who is the past-chair of the Commission on Cancer and the American Joint Committee on Cancer.
