  • A Town Hall discussion on drug shortages, one of the most urgent challenges in health care today, the ongoing and severe shortage of critical medications, particularly injectable opioids and local anesthetics. ASA has been aggressively engaged with the FDA, DEA, manufacturers, as well as Congress to help mitigate shortages. ASA President James D. Grant, M.D., M.B.A., FASA, and two other experts will address the issue.
  • Featured sessions, including:
    • Leading Improvements in Health through Safety and Innovation, which will provide unique perspectives on how academic medicine is shaping current and future trends in patient safety and innovation in health care.
    • Anesthesia and Cognition in the Elderly, which will emphasize how to talk to patients about postoperative cognitive decline in the elderly.
    • Anesthesia and the Developing Brain, a panel on the FDA label changes on the administration of anesthetic and sedative drugs to young patients (which were approved on April 16, 2017).
    • Smart Monitors, Nanoparticles and Big Data: Emerging Technology in Perioperative Medicine, a panel featuring ongoing work in the fields of wireless monitors, nanotechnology and big data analysis.
  • A keynote address from Josh Linkner, tech entrepreneur, New York Times-bestselling author and internationally recognized expert on innovation and applied creativity.
  • A Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) Scholarship Event, in which three scholars will be awarded grants to participate in the PSH Learning Collaborative 2020 to support their implementation of a PSH pilot at their institution. Industry supporters will be recognized for their support of this scholarship. Scholars will share their current experiences and plans for their PSH pilots.
