Newswise — Newswise — CHICAGO – African American and Hispanic children are less likely to have surgery than white children. People who use cannabis need more pain medicine during and after surgery. Some good news—opioid abuse is down. These studies are among the significant and newsworthy research being presented at ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2020, the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Oct. 2-5, which is all-virtual this year.

ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2020, the premier gathering of the specialty, will feature:

  • Welcome Session, VADM Jerome M. Adams, U.S. Surgeon General, has been invited to speak on Fri., Oct. 2.
  • Keynote speaker Frank S. Collins, M.D., PhD, Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will discuss the NIH’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and physician anesthesiologists’ role in the NIH’s HEAL (Helping to End Addiction Long-Term) initiative, which aims to supply scientific solutions to the national opioid crisis and innovative therapies for pain management.
  • Joanne M. Conroy, M.D., will present the Emery A. Rovenstine Lecture “Vital Signs: Transforming 21st Century Anesthesia Practice,” where she will explore three transformational issues the anesthesiology specialty must embrace: disruption, gender equity and patient safety.
  • Beverly Orser, M.D., will present the John W. Severinghaus Lecture “Anesthesiology: Resetting Our Sights on Long-term Outcomes,” where she will review several transformative discoveries that established anesthesiology. But more importantly she will then focus on – what’s next? How can physician anesthesiologists investigate the perioperative period to understand the biology of disease and develop new treatments?
  • Scientific research updates, will feature 600 abstracts highlighting the best science in the specialty.
  • Special sessions on the COVID-19 pandemic, will detail the experiences of physician anesthesiologists who have been on the front lines treating patients, developing innovations and providing guidance on topics like the return to essential surgery and PPE management, to help provide optimal patient care.
  • More than 200 educational sessions, covering topics including perioperative brain health and postoperative delirium, the use of artificial intelligence in anesthesia, current options to manage pain during labor and delivery, and more.
