Newswise — SAN FRANCISCO – The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) today presented Brian T. Bateman, M.D., M.Sc., with its 2018 James E. Cottrell Presidential Scholar Award in recognition of his outstanding career as a leading academic physician anesthesiologist, whose study of the uses and effects of drugs (pharmacoepidemiology) in pregnancy and epidemiology of pregnancy-related complications has significantly contributed to the field of anesthesiology.
Dr. Bateman is chief of the Division of Obstetric Anesthesia in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine and a researcher in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics in the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston. He is also associate professor of anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School, Boston.
Dr. Bateman has made fundamental contributions in the academic domain of research and clinical care within obstetric anesthesia. He has published extensively on the effects of opioid use in pregnancy, the safety of cardiovascular medications in pregnancy, predictors of severe maternal morbidity and mortality, and medication safety in the perioperative period. Dr. Bateman has authored over 150 peer-reviewed papers published in leading journals including The BMJ, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Anesthesiology and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG). His work has been cited over 5,700 times.
As a researcher at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dr. Bateman and his colleagues founded the Harvard Program in Pediatric and Perinatal Pharmacoepidemiology (H4P), which generates evidence regarding the safety of medications used during pregnancy and in childhood. He is principal investigator for a National Institute of Health’s National Institute on Drug Abuse grant that aims to evaluate safety concerns related to prescription opioid use during pregnancy.

Upon graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Yale College, New Haven, Connecticut, Dr. Bateman received his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, New York where he was awarded the Janeway Prize for the highest achievement and abilities in the graduating class. He then completed his residency in anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston where he was elected chief resident. Following his residency, Dr. Bateman completed the Program in Clinical Effectiveness (PCE) for clinical researchers and received a Master of Science in epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston.
In addition to his academic accomplishments, Dr. Bateman is a founding member of the International Pregnancy Safety Study Consortium (InPress), a collaborative effort between investigators from the United States, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden to pool data for studies evaluating the safety of medications in pregnancy. He is also a voting member of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products Advisory Committee and a member of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) Board of Directors. Dr. Bateman serves as associate editor of Anesthesiology, the peer-reviewed medical journal of the ASA, and is an ad hoc reviewer for 30 other journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, The BMJ and Circulation.
