Newswise — SAN DIEGO – The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) today presented Jed T. Wolpaw, M.D., with its 2021 Excellence in Education Award in recognition of his exemplary physician leadership and educational initiatives that have been adopted into anesthesiology resident training programs at the national level. The award is presented annually to an ASA member who has made significant contributions to the specialty through excellence in teaching, development of new teaching methods or the implementation of innovative educational programs.
Dr. Wolpaw has led numerous education initiatives in his current roles as associate professor and residency program director in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. Under his leadership, the institution’s resident training program has been ranked among the top in the nation. Additionally, he co-runs both the university’s anesthesiology clerkship and intensive care unit clerkship and attends in the surgical ICUs and general adult operating rooms.
An exceptional educator and communicator, Dr. Wolpaw is the founder and host of Anesthesia and Critical Care Reviews and Commentary, more commonly known as ACCRAC, a podcast focusing on topics in anesthesia and critical care. With more than 50,000 unique listeners each month from around the world, the podcast is used in dozens of resident training programs as part of their curricula. He also speaks nationally about anesthesia resident education and well-being.

Dr. Wolpaw has received numerous teaching awards, including being honored twice with the Johns Hopkins Dr. Charles Beattie Teaching Award, the most prestigious teaching award given by his department, and the university’s Residency Advocacy Award in recognition of his work advocating for resident well-being. In 2019, he was chosen as one of the inaugural winners of the Distinguished Educator Award given by ASA and the Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA).
Dr. Wolpaw is the current chair of SEA’s Resident Education Committee and serves on the board of the Association of Anesthesiology Core Program Directors. He has also published several papers on the impact of asynchronous learning.
Dr. Wolpaw graduated magna cum laude from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and then earned a master’s degree in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He received his medical degree and completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine. He completed his fellowship in critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
