EXPERT PITCH: FSU PROFESSOR AVAILABLE TO DISCUSS SUPER BOWL LIII THROUGH LENS OF SPORTS ANALYTICS

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —  The Super Bowl is the largest sporting event in American culture. These so-called mega sport events are more than just a game. Events of this magnitude afford the host city unprecedented opportunities to elicit social, economic and environmental benefits. Notably, the event has the capacity to transform a slack month of February into a Super Bowl windfall for the Atlanta metropolitan statistical area by attracting more viewership, generating more revenue and leading to more significant growth in tourism and convention business than any other single sporting event.

An expert from Florida State University’s Department of Sport Management is available to comment on the Super Bowl and sports analytics.

James Du, assistant professor, Department of Sport Management

Du’s research focuses on better understanding how event organizers can use an effective mixture of marketing strategies and data analytics to meet consumers’ increasing demand for quality experiences.

“Sports analytics are changing the game of American football and its future. With Super Bowl LIII around the corner, the National Football League just announced the inaugural NFL Big Data Bowl to show its commitment in engaging analytics for advancing the game. How do the market and media rate the game? What is the economic impact of the game? Can the Patriots extend their historical dynasty based on the Elo model — a simulation-driven prediction model whose goal is to calculate a team's winning chances based on historical head-to-head results and quality of opponent? Will there be a new record of cost for a 30-second ad set in 2019? All of these questions will enable fans to better appreciate the most lucrative annual spectacle through the lens of data science.”
