EMERGENCY PHYSICIANS HOLD ANNUAL CONVENTION IN LAS VEGAS; CELEBRATE 25 YEARS OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE RESIDENT'S ASSOCIATION

Washington, D.C. -- The American College of Emergency Physicians, a medical specialty organization of more than 20,000 members, will hold its premier annual convention -- Scientific Assembly -- from Monday, October 11, until Thursday, October 14, in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

As the world's most comprehensive forum for emergency medicine education, the convention will consist of more than 240 presentations in 4 days of courses, more than 350 exhibits, and a Research Forum with poster and oral presentations of original emergency medicine research. To celebrate the Silver Anniversary of the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA), ACEP will host several special events including an awards reception and an anniversary party.

More than 6,500 physicians, expert speakers, exhibitors, and guests will participate in the convention, which will offer hundreds of courses designed to address issues of vital concern to emergency physicians and sharpen clinical skills by giving the most relevant, leading-edge information on issues, topics, and techniques in emergency medicine, as well as in-depth coverage on the latest clinical controversies. More than 85 of the courses are new, including Airlines, Defibrillators, and Medical Kits: Is There a Doctor on Board?; Pediatric Emergency Myths, Misnomers and Controversies; The Millennium Bug: R U REDE 4 Y2K?; Public Health Care for the Future: Opportunities for Emergency Medicine; and an Injury Mechanism Workshop, taught by Ricardo Martinez, MD, Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Other new courses include a COBRA/EMTALA Roundtable: Directly from the Experts, and Highlights of the Research Forum in which a panel of experts will focus on the most interesting research abstracts.

The James D. Mills Memorial Lecture, the course selected this year as the most significant to emergency medicine, is Beyond Patient Care: Thriving in Competitive Times. In addition, a physician will give his firsthand account of emergency medicine's role in Kosavo and Albania in -- The Kosavo Crisis: International Emergency Medicine on the Frontlines of Human Disaster -- and discuss opportunities for emergency physicians and nurses to help. Popular returning courses include Biological Terrorism: Are You Prepared?, The Future of Emergency Medicine: What Will We Look Like in the New Millenium?, and Federal COBRA/EMTALA Law: 1999 Update and New HCFA Interpretive Guidelines.

Internationally known futurist and best-selling author, Ian Morrison, will be the keynote speaker during the opening General Session at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 11, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Morrison has authored numerous health care books, including Health Care in the New Millennium: Vision, Values and Leadership and The Second Curve -- Managing the Velocity of Change. During the General Session, he will examine the political, economic, and strategic context of changes in health care and analyze how various organizations are preparing for the future. Morrison serves as Chairman of the Health Futures Forum for Andersen Consulting, a global management and technology consulting firm.

Dr. Bob Arnot, chief medical correspondent for NBC's Dateline and Today, will be the keynote speaker at ACEP's Fellow Convocation and Awards Ceremony - discussing medicine and the news media - at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13. Dr. Arnot practiced emergency medicine from 1976 to 1984. Recipients of the following awards will be honored at the ceremony: John G. Wiegenstein Leadership Award, James D. Mills Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Medicine Award, Award for Outstanding Contribution in Education, Award for Outstanding Contribution in Research, EMS Award, and Council Meritorious Service Award.
