Newswise — Robert Archibald, president and CEO of the Missouri Historical Society, will be the keynote speaker at Northern Michigan University's commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 1. He will also receive an honorary doctor of history degree.
The Missouri Historical Society operates the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park, Mo., and the Missouri Historical Society Library and Research Center. Under Archibald, the organization has renovated and expanded its museum facility, and has transformed from a traditional historical organization into a national model recognized for regularly facilitating community discussions of significant issues. The museum was awarded the first-ever National Award for Museum Service in October 1994.
Since July 2002, Archibald has served as president of the National Council of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial. He oversees the National Heritage Signature Events and the Ad Council public awareness campaign designed to promote the themes of the Lewis and Clark expedition " cultural understanding, natural resource stewardship, courage and exploration. "Lewis and Clark: the National Bicentennial Exhibition" premiered in St. Louis in January and is traveling over a two-year period to Philadelphia, Denver and Portland, Ore., before a final showing at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
Archibald is a consultant to museums and historical associations. He writes and speaks on historical topics and on issues regarding the humanities, memory, environmental responsibilities, community values and museum practices. His most recent book is titled, A Place to Remember: Using History to Build Community.
Archibald earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from NMU, and his doctorate from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
