Newswise — CHICAGO (October 14, 2016): Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) Past-President Cheryl Lehman, awarded Dr. Grace Campbell, PhD MSW CRRN, and Dr. Beverly Reigle, PhD RN, the 2016 President’s Award. The awards were presented at REACH 2016, ARN’s annual educational conference, September 28 – October 1, in Philadelphia.

Lehman asserts, “Each of these individuals are passionate ambassadors for rehabilitation nursing. They are tireless advocates for people with cancer who will benefit from rehabilitation and they have focused on making sure rehabilitation nurses have the knowledge and tools available to help their patients meet their rehabilitation goals. I am confident that Bev and Grace will ensure rehabilitation nurses and ARN will play a key role in the future of Cancer Rehabilitation.”

Dr. Campbell is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Acute and Tertiary Care, University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. Dr. Reigle is an Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute. Both have been pioneers for ARN in the area of Cancer Rehabilitation and continue to make sure ARN defines the role of the rehabilitation nurse.

After receiving input and feedback from ARN members during the Cancer Rehabilitation Nursing Forum they led in New Orleans last year, Bev and Grace developed an outline for a position paper titled, Cancer Rehabilitation and the Role of the Rehabilitation Nurse. They reached out to members of the Oncology Nursing Society’s Survivorship and Rehabilitation SIG to collaborate on the statement. The group is currently in the process of writing the statement and will release it in 2017. Among other things it will provide a definition of cancer rehabilitation and need, the significance to the nursing profession, gaps in care, as well as define a call for research, education, and practice.

Additionally, each individual has represented ARN at external meetings to emphasize the importance of rehabilitation nursing in the role of cancer rehabilitation. This includes organizations like the Institute of Medicine, the National Quality Forum, and the National Institutes of Health.
