Newswise — Chicago (Sep. 26, 2018): The Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) has presented Genevieve Foley, MSN RN with the 2018 Dr. Casey Hooke Distinguished Service Award. Foley’s achievement was officially announced at the 42nd APHON Annual Conference and Exhibit, held September 13-15 in Savannah, GA. This award is presented to an APHON member who has demonstrated excellence to service and to leadership of APHON.

Foley has a long history with the association and has served in multiple roles, first, as a founding member of APHON when it started 42 years ago and went on to serve as a national president in the early years. Her enormous impact on the pediatric hematology/oncology specialty is clearly evident in her work as an author for all four editions of Nursing Care of Children and Adolescents with Cancer and Blood Disorders. With the advancements in the care of children with cancer and blood disorders, each new addition has been like writing a new book.

In her professional life, she has served as a nursing leader director of nursing and CNO at two different leading pediatric oncology institutions where she has mentored and guided many pediatric nurses. At the core of her practice, her focus was on the developing child who was experiencing cancer and the necessity for parent-nurse partnerships, as well as the essential role of nurses in advancing pediatric oncology care. Her APHON colleagues describe her as a wise and passionate leader that has advanced the mission of APHON. She has been a friend, colleague, and source of unending support to APHON members.

Casey Hooke, PhD APRN CNS CPON®, APHON Past President, stated “Gen has served as an amazing leader in APHON and has inspired and guided so many of us to contribute to our specialty’s knowledge as authors in APHON's text books. Her impact as a pediatric nursing leader is deep through both her professional work and her service to APHON as an editor and past president. We are all privileged to have her influence on our specialty."

The Dr. Casey Hooke Distinguished Service Award was established in Hooke’s name to celebrate the fine leadership Dr. Hooke displayed as President during a difficult period in the organization’s history.
