Expert Dr. Diane Spatz of Penn Nursing on her first exposure to breastfeeding as a nurse and how that influenced her in creating a seminar in breastfeeding and human lactation.
Breastfeeding in public continues to cause controversy. Expert Dr. Diane Spatz of Penn Nursing is available to talk about the importance of breastfeeding and lactation recommendations for the workplace.
Dr. Spatz, professor of perinatal nursing, says that nurses must "find ways to promote breastfeeding and help women and their families to achieve breastfeeding success. Educated nurses should be the first level of intervention for all breastfeeding women and their infants."
The U.S. Surgeon General considers the lack of breastfeeding in the United States a public health crisis. The World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics are among the professional organizations to recommend that infants be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life.
"Our role as nurses is essential in helping women and their families achieve their personal breastfeeding goals," says Dr. Spatz.
