BUSM Medical Students to Celebrate Match Day

BOSTON, MA - Graduating medical students from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) are anxiously awaiting Thursday, March 16, when they and their peers from across the country will learn where they have been "matched" with a hospital to undergo postgraduate training in intern and residency programs.

At precisely 12 noon, the fourth-year students will rush to their mailboxes where they will find envelopes that contain their match. Surrounded by family and friends, students will tear open these envelopes in anticipation of the news inside.

Included among this year's graduating class at BUSM are a number of married couples hoping to "match" at the same location so they can remain together; a married female student who is expecting her first child; and a married female student with two young children.

Medical students across the country compete for residency assignments through the National Residency Matching Program. Students interview at selected teaching hospitals, after which both the student and the hospital submit their top choices for placement. A national computer system matches the choices of students and hospitals.

Match Day begins precisely at 12 noon. Media interested in attending the event should arrive NO LATER THAN 11:45 a.m. For parking, please contact Christopher Smalley or Rebecca Sullivan at 617-638-8491.
