David Gondek, an assistant professor of biology at Ithaca College, is available to discuss the Center for Disease Control report that shows the infection rates of the most common sexually transmitted diseases hit an all-time high in 2015.

“These increased infections come at a time when over half of the nation’s STD clinics have been underfunded or closed in the past year,” Gondek said. “Thus, our ability to combat these infections is significantly diminished.”

Gondek’s research focus is communicable diseases, and he’s currently examining the interactions between the chlamydia trachomatis bacteria and host cells.

Chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis are the three most common STDs. Last weeks’ CDC report showed that all three saw an increase of reported cases in 2015. Reported cases of chlamydia topped out at over 1.5 million, with 15- to 24-year-olds accounting for more than two-thirds of those infections.

Gondek is available for interviews and can be reached at [email protected], or by contacting Dan Verderosa in the Ithaca College Office of Marketing Communications at [email protected] or 607-274-1440.
