Newswise — UNION CITY, Calif., August 24, 2020 --  Mizuho OSI®, a leading manufacturer of specialty surgical tables and pressure injury abatement solutions would like to announce the publication of a new clinical study titled   “23-hour Total Hip Replacement Requiring Only 3.5 Opioid Pills Through 6 Weeks: A Non-selected Prospective Consecutive One Year Cohort”,  by Andrew Wickline MD, now appearing in the peer-reviewed Journal of Orthopedic Experience & Innovation. (JournalOEI)

Dr. Wickline, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and one of New York’s top arthroplasty surgeons, is the study’s primary researcher and author.  After years of clinical practice performing posterior approaches to hip replacement, he adopted the anterior approach technique using the Hana® Orthopedic Table in 2008.  Dr. Wickline realized that his anterior approach patients appeared to have less pain postoperatively than those who had posterior approach procedures.  He endeavored to study and demonstrate that the direct anterior approach (DAA) total hip arthroplasty (THA) using the Hana Table could result in little need for opioids for pain relief.

Opioids have been traditionally used for pain management after hip replacement surgery, despite the very real potential for addiction and opioid-related complications. Studies suggest that between 4-8% of hip replacement patients become chronically addicted.  Considering the 500,000 hip replacements done each year in the US, the potential for addiction is staggering.

From January 2019 through January 2020 Dr. Wickline tracked all of his hip replacement patients, each undergoing a direct anterior approach procedure on the Hana table; and found that 38% of them required no opioids for pain management at all after their procedure, and 97% utilized 10 pills or less.  Further, over 94% of patients went home in less than a day and over 95% of patients did not need formal physical therapy.  The average opioid pills per patient was 3.5 pills total, a much lower rate than previously reported.

“Reducing opioid prescriptions for orthopedic procedures can help reduce the risk of an individual developing addiction to them.  My goal is to someday eliminate the need for opioids in my practice.  I’m pleased that my team along with the Hana technology, can report the lowest usage in the nation for hip replacements today.” said Dr. Wickline.

Greg Neukirch, VP of Sales & Marketing at Mizuho OSI, noted, “Finding ways to minimize the risk of narcotic addiction is particularly salient in light of growing literature suggesting that post-surgical patients are at increased risk for chronic opioid use.”

Since its introduction in 2005, the Hana Orthopedic Table has been installed in operating rooms world-wide, enabling orthopedic surgeons to surgically treat a variety hip disorders.
