Newswise — Did Barack Obama's 30-minute address to the nation effectively convey his campaign message? Temple communications experts respond to the $4 million dollar television spot with analysis and commentary.

Andrew Mendelson, associate professor and chair of the journalism department, says the 30-minute infomercial was not created to focus on his platform. "It was about affect and emotion; connecting his story with that of small-town America. His concerns are our concerns; his values are our values," says Mendelson. "He visually connected himself with average Americans, bringing people together to hear their concerns and help them find solutions. His approach represents a communitarian vision of society - where government and people are one.

Mendelson's research focuses on how people cognitively and emotionally process visual images. His most recent research examines the influence of cultural on photographic imagery.
