ROCHESTER, Minn. ─ The Mayo Clinic: Faith – Hope – Science a companion book to the Ken Burns’ documentary by the same name is now available.

The documentary by the acclaimed filmmaker will air on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 9 p.m. EDT on PBS. Ken Burns is the executive producer of the documentary, which is directed by Burns, Erik Ewers and Christopher Loren Ewers. The two-hour film, which will be rebroadcast on Wednesday, Sept. 26, chronicles the history of Mayo Clinic from its roots as an unlikely partnership between a country doctor and a Franciscan order of nuns to its position today as a worldwide model for patient care, research and education. Check local listings for the broadcast times in your area.

The companion book, authored by David Blistein and Burns, features more than 400 archival and modern images in black and white and color, as well as the complete film script. The book also includes a foreword by Burns and an introduction by John Noseworthy, M.D., president and CEO, Mayo Clinic.

“Teamwork is a hallmark of Mayo Clinic,” writes Dr. Noseworthy, in the book’s introduction. “Every day, more than 60,000 colleagues unite their diverse skills to serve patients and advance medical science. … On behalf of the patients we serve, and everyone who looks to Mayo Clinic for hope and healing, it is a privilege to share this story with you.”

The companion book blends historical narrative with contemporary patient stories and includes interviews with the late Sen. John McCain, the Dalai Lama and many others. The book also sheds light on doctors and nurses in their most private moments as they face difficult diagnoses and embark on uncertain treatments. Included in the book are personal stories and a behind-the-scenes look at Mayo Clinic.

The book is also newsworthy, as it takes a timely look at how Mayo Clinic — just named the No. 1 hospital in the country by U.S. News & World Report — has met the changing demands of health care for 150 years and continues to innovate and advance medicine. And the film and companion book tell the story of how Mayo Clinic has managed to stay true to its primary value: The needs of the patient come first.

The book is published by RosettaBooks and available for $24.95. Proceeds from book sales will support patient care, research and education at Mayo Clinic.
