Newswise — Cynthia Rivera has been named Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s principal associate director for Operations & Business (PAD/O&B), Lab Director Bill Goldstein announced today.

She will assume her responsibilities on Jan 4.

Rivera was chosen for this key Laboratory senior leadership position following an extensive national search. As the PAD/O&B, she will lead the multidisciplinary 1,000-person organization. She will serve as a key leader for Laboratory operations and represent the Laboratory externally to the Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration and peer organizations and laboratories, as well as private industry and the local community.

“Cynthia is a talented, award-winning management professional with more than 28 years of leadership experience in support and technical operations at Department of Energy and Department of Defense facilities,” Goldstein said. “Her extensive background inludes support and technical operations, as well as project management responsibilities. She is mission-driven and engages with a collaborative style.”

Rivera is currently the manager of functional resources at Bechtel Power Company’s Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 & 4 construction project. In this position she serves as a member of the project executive management team, and is responsible for managing a staff of more than 1,400 personnel and leading special projects including the project’s COVID-19 crisis management team. Additionally, she oversees process improvements in safety, quality assurance, project controls, communications, field engineering, material management, and work package and records management. She holds a master’s degree in communication studies and a certificate in business management, both from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Rivera replaces Erik McKinzie, who served as acting PAD following Reva Nickelson’s retirement from the Laboratory in July. Since that time, McKinzie has continued to move the O&B organization forward by taking on issues as they arose, “displaying excellent judgment and leadership while working with his team on finding solutions. Eric has been an active and valued participant in the Senior Management Team meetings, and consistently contributes thoughtful and insightful opinions and actions on myriad topics at the institutional level.” Goldstein said. “He has done an excellent job as acting PAD and I appreciate his efforts and the Laboratory community’s support in the transition in leadership over the last several months.”
