ëDead Man Walkingí Nun, Sister Helen Prejean, To Speak, Receive Honorary Degree at University of San Francisco Graduation

SAN FRANCISCO ó Sister Helen Prejean, C.S.J., (Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet) advocate for the abolishment of capital punishment, will receive an honorary degree and speak at the University of San Francisco commencement on at 3 p.m. on Friday May 21. Other USF commencement ceremonies are on May 21, 22 and 23.

Sr. Prejean, known for work with death row inmates, received national attention with the release of the motion picture "Dead Man Walking," based on her book of the same name. She will give the commencement address at the College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate ceremony.

Additional commencement speakers, honorary degree recipients or both include the Rev. Fred Kammer, S.J., president, Catholic Charities USA, Alexandria, Va.; Ashley Bryan, author, illustrator and storyteller, Islesford, Maine; Steven P. Westly, vice president, sales and business development, eBay, Inc., San Jose; David A. Coulter, former president, Bank of America; Mary Jo Gorney-Moreno, president, California Board of Registered Nursing and professor, San Jose State University; and Leigh Steinberg, Steinberg & Moorpad, Newport Beach, Calif. More than 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students will participate in USFís 140th graduation. All ceremonies will be held in St. Ignatius Church, at the corner of Fulton Street and Parker Avenue on the university campus.

* May 21, 3 p.m. ó College of Arts and Sciences undergraduates, speaker and honorary degree recipient (humane letters) Sr. Helen Prejean, C.S.J., author, lecturer and community activist, New Orleans;

* May 21, 6 p.m., School of Nursing, speaker Mary Jo Gorney-Moreno, president, California Board of Registered Nursing and professor, San Jose State University;

* May 22, noon, School of Education, speaker and honorary degree recipient (humane letters) Ashley Bryan, author, illustrator, storyteller, Isleford, Maine;

* May 22, noon, College of Professional Studies, speaker and honorary degree recipient (humane letters) The Rev. Fred Kammer, S.J., president, Catholic Charities USA, Alexandria, Va.;

* May 23, 1:30 p.m., School of Law, Leigh Steinberg, Steinberg & Moorpad, Newport Beach, Calif. (Note: The 1996 movie "Jerry Maguire" was loosely based on the life of Leigh Steinberg).
