PULITZER-WINNING PHOTOJOURNALIST AND FILMMAKER JOHN KAPLAN COLLABORATES WITH ASCO AT ANNUAL MEETING
Will Be in Chicago June 4-6 to Discuss Issues of Cancer Coping and Survivorship; Raise Awareness About Acclaimed New Film Among Oncology Professionals; Available for Interviews Newswise — Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist John Kaplan, whose acclaimed new film, Not As I Pictured, chronicles his own cancer treatment and recovery, will be featured at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
Kaplan will discuss the unique humanitarian program now underway to give away 10,000 copies to anyone touched by cancer, and raise awareness among oncology professionals about this upbeat and life-affirming film. Diagnosed at age 48 with lymphoma, Kaplan “turned the lens on himself” and documented his experience in this moving visual journal, endorsed by leading oncology professionals. An educational kit produced in collaboration with ASCO accompanies the DVD, with coping and lifestyle tips for patients, caregivers, and survivors. Kaplan is a full professor at the University of Florida.
ASCO’s 47th Annual Meeting will be attended by 30,000+ cancer specialists. Not As I Pictured will be featured near the front of the exhibition hall, at booth 3012, Patient Advocate Pavilion. Stands throughout the exhibition hall will have free copies for attendees. The film trailer will be featured frequently on “ASCO TV” – the internal television network airing at the conference hall, in hotels, and on shuttle buses.
Kaplan will be available for both on- and off-site interviews about his film, his plan to give away 10,000 copies, how the film helps cancer patients, and to discuss issues of cancer coping, caregiving, and survivorship. Not As I Pictured has won more than 20 leading honors. Musicians including Michael Stipe of R.E.M., Chris Martin of Coldplay, will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas, and Justin Timberlake donated music for the soundtrack.
