Author of seminal scientific papers on spirometry and respiratory surveillance recognized

Newswise — The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), an international medical society, honored Mary C. Townsend, DrPH, with the ACOEM Health Achievement in Occupational Medicine Award. The award – presented April 28 during its 2013 American Occupational Health Conference in Orlando – recognizes an ACOEM member for a specific, unique achievement in occupational and environmental medicine.

Dr. Townsend, Principal/Consultant at M.C. Townsend Associates, LLC, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Assistant Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health, was bestowed the 2013 Health Achievement in Occupational Medicine Award for her contributions to the field of pulmonary medicine, particularly as author of the seminal scientific papers on spirometry and respiratory surveillance – significant contributions to the literature which summarize advances of particular relevance to occupational health practice.

A renowned expert in spirometry testing, Dr. Townsend was also lauded for her educational achievements in the field as exemplified by her spirometry training programs and for her work on the Pulmonary Panel for ACOEM’s Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines. A member of the Editorial Board for the journal Chest, Dr. Townsend has also served as a reviewer for ACOEM’s Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Dr. Townsend received her DrPH from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. She joined ACOEM in 1997, and has served the College as a member of its Occupational Lung Disorders Committee for more than 15 years. Dr. Townsend is a member of the Tri State Occupational Medical Association, an ACOEM component society.
