Lifetime achievement award recognizes contributions as an educator and researcher

Newswise — The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), an international medical society, honored Stefanos N. Kales, MD, MPH, FACOEM, with the Kehoe Award for Excellence in Education or Research in Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

The award – presented April 28 during its 2013 American Occupational Health Conference in Orlando – is a lifetime achievement award that recognizes an individual who has shown distinction in and made significant contributions to academic excellence or research in the disciplines of occupational medicine, environmental medicine, and/or environmental health.

Dr. Kales is Division Chief, Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM), and Medical Director, Employee and Industrial Medicine, at Cambridge Health Alliance, Cambridge, Mass. He was recognized for his contributions as an educator and researcher and specifically cited for the programs he developed to improve firefighter fitness particularly related to cardiopulmonary issues. Dr. Kales was also cited for his work in the field of sleep medicine and his major contributions in OEM toxicology as evidenced by numerous scientific peer-reviewed articles he authored.

As Director of Harvard’s OEM residency, Dr. Kales was also recognized for developing new approaches to training residents in health and productivity and disability prevention, and motivating them to pursue a wide range of research projects.

Dr. Kales received his MD from Harvard Medical School and his MPH from Harvard School of Public Health. He is currently Associate Professor at both Harvard’s Medical School and School of Public Health. Dr. Kales is certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in occupational medicine and is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

About the Kehoe Award — Kehoe Award for Excellence in Education or Research in Occupational and Environmental Medicine has been presented annually to a leader in the field of OEM education and research since 1957. The award was named for Robert A. Kehoe, MD, (1893-1992), director of the Kettering Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati, and a past president of ACOEM (1949-50) and pioneer in the field of OEM.
