Rutgers Opera Expert Available to Discuss New Wave of Transgender Singers, History of Voice Altering in Opera

New Brunswick, N.J. (July 24, 2019) – Eduardo Chama, co-head of Opera Theater Rutgers at Rutgers University–New Brunswick’s Mason Gross School of the Arts, is available to discuss the topic of transgender opera singers who risk changing their voices and affecting careers while transitioning.

“For transgender opera performers in transition with surgical or hormonal means, the voice can be modified by lowering or increasing the range to a higher pitch. This is a challenge to opera singers, but considering how much transgender people are overcoming, I don’t see it as a barrier in their careers. In today’s opera, everything is possible and everything is welcome. Art is supposed to represent what is going on in our society. Today’s opera is multicultural, multi-spiritual and open to the next chapter and challenge. Transgender singers are adding additional greatness to the already wonderful and colorful world of opera singing.”
